We are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Georgie Gent from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee. The left-back arrives at Oakwell on a three-year deal, with a further option in the Club's favour. The 20-year-old joined Rovers from Manchester City’s academy in 2019, spending last season on loan at SPL side Motherwell where he made 31 appearances in all competitions catching the eye of many EFL teams scoring 2 goals and generating 5 assists. Gent said, “I'm over the moon to join a massive football club like Barnsley. I can't wait to meet my teammates and meet the fans." Barnsley FC Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz said, “We watched Georgie at Motherwell a lot last season and we feel he is a top prospect for the future who also has the maturity to step straight in an make an impact this year. "We first entered into discussions with Blackburn in May, but they wanted to take him away for pre-season and assess him, so we started to work on other deals. However, we ultimately made the decision to hold out for Georgie as our top target in that position. "So far this summer we have tried to bring in exciting young talent alongside some experienced pros and we are confident that this blend is going to give us an identity that the fans can be proud of.” Gent will link up with Darrell Clarke’s side this morning ahead of the start of the 24/25 season opener against Mansfield Town next Friday. "I'm a young, exciting left-back. I like to get at players and deliver balls into the box - which is one of my strengths." - Georgie Gent Continue reading...
See, top target all along. You would imagine if he and Longelo were after the same wages and we wanted this lad, it makes sense for us to let the deal fall through.
This is a really positive signing - the club have done well to sort this. There's only Cole from the four departures who hasn't been replaced, and I think we've upgraded on all three so far.
Good luck Georgie. Can’t wait to see him whipping the crosses in. I have a feeling this season might be a lot more entertaining than last. Whether we’ll get as many points remains to be see of course but I certainly think we will be attacking with much more pace.
I agree. Whilst Cole, Cadden, Kane and Williams are, of course good players, it did seem that they'd gone stale here. They just seemed to be going through the motions towards the end of last season. I said at the time that I was glad they were leaving as the squad as a whole needed a reset and a freshen up. Hopefully with these new additions we'll see that come to fruition.
Ye was getting a bit disheartened yesterday as this deal seemed to be staling and Taylorr who I liked went to Uddersfield... Hopefully the Mansfield deal may still be on ...good move this one
3 year contract with an option for another year, sounds very promising. I assume their will be a sell-on clause, hope it’s not to high
From what I've seen (admittedly, not a great deal) this signing looks better than the lad we were linked to from Birmingham.
https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2024/august/02/georgie-joins-barnsley/ I wouldn't worry about a sell on. They would have mentioned it if they was one.
Looks and sounds like a very astute signing. I'm getting quite excited again now (I never learn), we've signed a good blend of youth and older heads to go along with players we know can cut it like Philips, Connell and so on. If we can get a goalscorer and a keeper I might start to believe we can do as well as or better than last season
Good to have a left wing back in the squad. Fingers crossed he does well, stays injury free and contributes in his time with us.
