Very sad, obviously been unwell for a while but kept very private, which is his and his family’s prerogative of course.

One or sporting heroes growing up. What a player, and seemed such a nice bloke too. Gutted.

Really sad news, a terrific batsman for county and country 44.66 average at international level and 16 centuries too, a very stylish cricketer and he will be greatly missed.

Of which were plenty, his attitude was integral to turning almost certain defeat into a respectable result.

    Sad news indeed.
Along with Gower and Cook he was one of our best left handed batters I’ve seen.
He seemed so genuine when I met him in a hospitality “do” at Headingley.
    RIP sir

R.I.P. His partnership with Nasser Hussain in the 1997 Ashes series was one of my first proper cricket memories. Inspirational.

His average of just under 45 is skewed by him very often being at the crease at 20/3 or worse.

In a better side (which we were seeing towards his eventual retirement) he’d have scored and averaged even more. He was the best in the team in the mid to late nineties by a mile.

I still think they got it wrong dropping him before the 05 ashes. They made it all about him or KP, but I’d have picked both and blooded Ian Bell in slightly later.

    Doesn’t matter now.

Thanks for the memories, he was my favourite player when I watched as a kid, well, him and Gough.

No age, and whatever ailment he suffered he’s free from now.

A truly great batsmen that regularly shone in a generally weak team. A mixture of ticker and technique. Probably one of my 3 favourite batsmen (alongside Gooch and Robin Smith).

Such a shame he's gone so soon, but perhaps a relief from what seemed to be a lengthy illness.

And the fact that he was a fellow 'kaggie' hander as well.
And at 55, aww what a shame. He was a top County and International player. :(
