Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of USA International goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina on a season long loan from Chelsea. The 20-year-old stopper became the youngster keeper in MLS history when he made his debut for Chicago Fire at the age of 17 in 2021 and subsequently made a big money move to Stamford Bridge a year later in 2022. Last season Slonina spent the year at Belgium Club K.A.S Eupen, making 28 starts for the Belgium Pro League Club before heading off to be a part of the United States Olympic side in Paris this summer. After representing his country at various youth levels, Slonina made his senior USMNT debut against Serbia in January 2023. Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz said, “We are really pleased to bring in Gabriel, he is one of few very high level young goalkeepers in the world and already a senior international at 20, we feel this is a mutually beneficial move where Gabriel can test himself as a first team player at Oakwell in an extremely competitive league while we get the benefit of an elite level young player with experience beyond his age. “We signed Jackson Smith as our long term number one earlier in the summer but we have also been on the lookout for a season long loan option with plenty of high level experience to allow Jackson time to grow into our number 1. James Bittner has a track record of working with young up and coming players and we are seeing this first hand with the progress Jackson is already making.” Gabriel becomes our second USMNT international alongside Donovan Pines, and he will wear the number one shirt this season. I thought Kilip played well last night. He will have been aware of the signing of Slonina but still put in an assured performance. Clarke said there are plans for all the keepers this season. Welcome Gabriel.
Interesting, as I thought he was terrible. His lack of communication with the defence was one part of why we looked so vulnerable in the first 20 minutes, in my very humble opinion.
Add to that he faced 3 shots in the first half and let every single one in. Quinns finish was class but my 12 year old would have saved the other 2.
Killip got beaten at his near post by that wonderful man Gregory (who promptly began to give it large in front of some upset looking young kids but if that's what pleases him fair enough).
I thought the second was down to slack marking but the first was a great finish. The save in the second half ,Clough said "you'll not see a better save all season."
I thought at the time it was a wonder save but then seeing a replay it’s one I would expect any competent keeper to make. It wasn’t in a corner or away from him.
2 cracking goals by mansfield showed our weaknesses, think smith should be back up keeper and killip out on loan, as soon as i saw his name I knew we would lose
Yeah when you listen to the appalling comments he/Gregory gets, he's entitled to celebrate like that. Ok I can't stand him either to be honest, and I won't forget his 'questionable' involvement, in how and why we lost that day at Wembley. But he still knows where the net is, especially at Oakwell.
