I think the point is if you want to find a on whatever platform Max Watters is rubbish thread you are spoiled for choice isn't just nice to find one that is the opposite. The lads trying his best the effort there unfortunately In the game he's in the harder you try the whose it gets. We call ourselves supporters but at times we are anything but is Max going to be a Barnsley legend probably not but if he puts a shift in when he pulls on that shirt he will have my support.
I like to see movement up front where the front men are pulling defenders around a bit. Wigan are pretty good defensively, but the mobility we had with Marsh and Watters second half was much better than Cosgrove and Marsh in the first. Same with Derby when Jalo came on and started finding pockets of space. Watters offers movement and acceleration and I'll take that over Cosgrove any day of the week but doesn't seem to have a goal scorers instinct. As others have said though, the strikers weren't getting too many gilt-edged chances last night, for all our possession.
This time last year (or probably more July last year) I said on here that I thought if he was given the minutes, he would score about 15 for us in the season. Clearly I was way off. I do think he’s one of those that if they get 1, they’ll end up with a few. But is he going to get 1 before we bring reinforcements in? Not sure on the evidence so far. That chance in the latter stages was another poor attempt. His overall play during the game was much better though. He looks quicker this season. Also stuck his penalty away well.
I thought his work rate was great and annoyed stags defence alot. A goal or 2 and he be a different player.
Because he got so much stick and his confidence was so low last season I think he was hiding in games - better to do nothing rather than get involved and make a mistake so to speak. I think the change of head coach and the clean slate that brings has been good for him. He's certainly not hiding and is working hard. I believe goals will start to go in for him if he continues to do that and as others have said, we can help by supporting him until that happens.
I was in favour of keeping him. sadly he seems to have lost confidence which is a pity cos his pace and movement have definitely improved. I was mega impressed in the Mansfield game when he came from 2 yards behind the defender and blew him away. We all commented we needed pace and there it is, we also need to remember you need to create chances to miss em so he's getting in the right area's. So two-thirds of his game is looking good it just remains to correct his finishing.
Capable of playing in the Championship but like every striker, needs games to get the sharpness to score goals.....100% confident he will and there is potential alongside Cosgrove to develop a much better partnership then the one we had last year where both players did not compliment one another
He certainly looks the part with pace and stature and Darrell is playing him so it's up to Watters to grasp the opportunity. I loved the massive smile after he scored his pen, maybe that will be the turning point for him.
51 posts of extreme straw-clutching. All 3 of them are toss and it's utter negligence that we're in this position.
Without a doubt, his best showing for over a year. I wish him well as I do all Barnsley players at the club. But he now needs to step up. No one will know that more than him and that goes for 2/3 others. As for those saying no pressure with the penalty. I'd say the opposite. Massive pressure given the stick he gets from fans. That is certainly starting to change. It'll certainly have given him a boost mentally.
Like to see how he performs alongside a ‘proper’ goal scoring striker, could make all the difference to him.
If you look at just the appearances and goals scored in his natural centre forward position: Minutes: 3569 Goals: 22 Goal every 162 minutes or 1.8 games.
Seems he has lots of pace which doesn't get utilised much? Maybe this new lad pinging balls from deep can make use of some runs in behind the defence.
