Taking legal action against Trump, Musk and Rowling as well as the X platform (no pun intended). Be very interested to follow how this pans out. https://www.itv.com/news/2024-08-14...ing-lawsuit-against-musk-trump-and-jk-rowling
I was really surprised at J.K. Rowling on this. Despite the hammer she's had over the years, what I've read always seems to have been coming from a good place. Not that I've read everything she's ever said. This time though, she just completely shot from the hip and got it completely wrong. Arguably bigoted even. People got dragged in too. Nicola Adams etc. People are generally responsible for doing their own fact checking like, but this is why Twitter has become such a toxic platform for me. The influence it has. Now people are coming out and publicly apologising. Which is good news. Hopefully a few people will think twice in future. Or just once, even.
I'm afraid I disagree wholeheartedly that it ever came from a good place. I originally gave her the benefit of the doubt but looking back now, her approach has been insensitive and directly transphobic for quite some time. She regularly, deliberately misgenders people and she often wades into controversies to attack trans people without taking time to check facts or establish context. This isn't a one off. She hides behind a platform of protecting vulnerable women from abusive men but her aggressive and callous behaviour is actually detrimental to that cause as it's gaining more public sympathy to the side she opposes. That's before we get into the vulnerability and suicide rates of young trans (and other LGBTQ) who she regularly attacks. I would also add that the first signs of her transphobia came when she was caught liking an extremely discriminatory tweet against trans men. She apologised at the time but since then the mask has slipped more and more often. She also famously tweeted in response to another tweet aimed at "people who menstruate" to say that she believes the only people who menstruate are women. Several people have gone on record to confirm Imane Khelif menstruates. Rowling has labelled her a man. It's not rational and it's not constructive. That doesn't mean I think there are not hugely important and sensitive issues to discuss relating to the protection and wellbeing of cisgender women. It's just that I believe their biggest cheerleader is a deranged bigot who needs to shut up and go away.
I don't disagree with any of what you say there. Like I say, I haven't really researched much. That's on me. What I've read has generally come across as pro-women, rather than anti-trans. Unlike Graham Linehan, who just completely went off the rails with it. But I'm not doubting what you're saying.
Technically, she (through her lawyer) has made a complaint to the department that investigates criminal behaviour online. This could result in a criminal trial and prison sentences/fines rather than a civil trial and damages.
Generally because they don't understand the meaning of the term. (cis is Latin for "on this side" as opposed to trans "On the other side")
I don't understand what you:re trying to say. I rarely ever use the term but in this particular post it was the correct term to provide clarity on what I was referring to in the statement within which it is contained. There's a pretty big difference between that and actively using the term at all times. I don't refer to a gay man as a gay man. I just call him a man.. but if I was talking about social challenges and discrimination between straight men and gay men then terminology relating to sexuality is required for clarity. Right?
I havent suggested otherwise, bud. I generally didn't understand the term - I've only ever seen it on twitter where women tend to say I'm not Cis and take offence, saying they're just women. I thought it meant straight woman until I got called right wing and blocked for using straight instead of cis, so I googled it and it just meant the body you were born with. Hence why I'm unsure of the offence of being called cis
Trump tells so many lies he no longer knows or cares what’s real, and neither do his cult. It’ll just be another legal case coming his way, and they’ll explain it away as ‘free speech’ and paint him as the victim of ‘lawfare’.
Talking about this in the pub the other night and Caster Semenya was brought into the conversation the South African runner my mate said they thought she was a guy and is now married with 2 kids.
She previously kept a bit of a mask up to try and appear less obnoxious to people that just see her comments out of context, but it's always been vile when you read between the lines. She was an author after all, she's quite good with words. This time though she went straight off the deep end and put her bigotry on display for all to see.
Your mate is half right. Caster Semenya is an intersex female - female but with some male parts (she has internal testes but no uterus or ovaries) - and is married to another woman who has two kids through artificial insemination.
It's very long, but if you want to understand the stuff she says and the effect it has, this is a wonderful video.
I think both Rowling and Linehan have been radicalised. I don't think either of them started out as "transphobic", however they've both been on the frontline of the culture war for so long that they've become incresingly bitter and hostile to the other side. Elon has clearly done the same. Rowling started out wanting to maintain a cis-women only space for victims of domestic violence. I don't think that is inherently transphobic and I have sympathy for that position. However, Imane Khelif is a woman, has spent her whole life as a woman, grew up in a country with quite repressive laws regarding women, and if you want to protect women then you should be on her side. If it does transpire that Khelif is intersex, or has elevated testosterone, then she should be treated with sympathy and support. She hasn't gone out as a man beating up women to get a gold medal, which is how she has been incorrectly portrayed. There is a transgender sprinter participating in the Paralympics, so expect even more Twitter outrage.
Apologies thought you were criticising my use of it. In fairness labels are not ideal in general speech and actively referring to cis/trans gender people in that way when not needed is an understandable thing to not like.
This was the first time she actively engaged in transphobia by liking this tweet. It pre dates her social cause for private spaces for cis women. She claimed it was an accident at the time but within a year was ramping up with more direct attacks. She wrote the a narrative that she's a victim by hijacking the cis safe space cause but she has regularly has referred to trans women as men and sex offenders since the very early days. Looking back that first 'like' was a big giveaway of the real JK Rowling
I guess she means that socialists are mostly men who stick together with trans women but not cis women? Hard to be sure. The way I view tweets like this is how does it look if you replace the demographic the person refers to themself as with white people and the demo they say gets preferential treatment as brown. I never get this concept of starting with a legitimate complaint but then turning it around to attack an unrelated group of people.
