Did anyone on here go this one? First match of the season and a nightmare debut for Alan Little. According to the report I've just read he deflected a goal past Spingett; gave away a needless penalty, and missed an open goal from 6 yards when he headed over the bar. Imagine the reaction to a debut like that these days! Turned out to be a bargain for ten grand imo. Was it also Mick McCarthy's debut in the return leg at Oakwell?
Did we win the return leg 2-0 in 90 mins and go out in extra time because away goals only counted after extra time?
We won the second leg 3-0, with Macca getting one of the goals. Drew Man City at home in the next round; won the toss for home advantage for the replay, then duly lost 2-0.
I was there but can only remember bits of info. Can anybody recall Peacheys hat trick at home against Scunny in 76 ( I think ) ? We’d just sold Otulakowski so it was our way of saying we don’t need him but the money was nice !
The Scunny game the season before saw a right old carry on. I think we won with a penalty, but they were a really 'dirty' side. I can recall their players and manager being spat on and abused as they went up the tunnel at the end of the game.
I think it was Nov 76 as I’ve always thought my first game was Bradford City earlier that year…. however, I’ve been wrong many a time
Lol, no you're right. I should have consulted my records rather than trusting my memory. I remember that game as it was the first one I'd got my mate to come to. After that a whole bunch of us from school followed them until college split us all up in 1979.
I was there mate, as I know I went from 67 to 79 without missing a home game. I Broke mi leg sunday morning.oct 79. Lad was born. So both me n mrs in hospital. Reason I say that lot is. The 1st game I missed was Chessy at om . As for 77 I remember bugger all bar tying the knot.
Remember it well. As excited teenagers we reckoned a couple of them were worthy of goals of the century.
Yep i was there.. 4-1 away 3-0 at home then 0-2 in the replay at oakwell.. I'd never seen us play a big club. So remember being very disappointed losing the reply;
Spot on young man. I was sat on the toilet block at the back of the Ponty. I saw John Peachey walking down to the ground from the bus station! Carrying his own boots! Different times. Mick Wandsworth played for Scunthorpe. PE teacher at Willowgarth at the time. I understand Monday morning at the school was interesting!!
Following season we missed out on Man City again, only this time it was in the FA Cup and to Rotherham. The replay at Millmoor was postponed at least twice due to the weather too.
