Sorry, but you have to define’top striker’ Do you mean well known, Journeyman, well-known young’un who has the potential to be a top scorer, etc, etc?
Definitely think we’ll sign someone. A “Top” striker is up for debate though . Where we’re shopping I find it highly unlikely.
I expect us to sign a foreign striker, no pre-season so unfit. Plus we will have to get a work permit. So expect to see him playing in mid October
My issue is… The board have known since January that Mcatee and Cole would need replacing. We’ve had since January to identify people and get them signed up. We’re now a few days away from the end of the transfer window and we’ve signed some decent players but not replaced Mcatee or Cole. We’ve had months to identify and sign the players to replace those 2 but not done it.
I've gone yes we will. but top striker Is stretching it a bit. (One with a decent record at a lower level or decent record coming in on loan) . I suppose we could all answer no in that case.
We will do what we always do, bring in a lower league player and a loan signing. The first mentioned sign will go into the under twenty ones team, then be loaned out. Why don't this board spend a bit of money on a recognised striker like any other team in this league will do. It's the same old story every transfer window, we were after signing such a player, but a lower league team offered more for him. Our club is becoming a real laughing stock. We have absolutely zero ambition unfortunately, but this is Barnsley FC after all I have been supporting the Reds for over 57, Years by the way, but sadly nothing ever changes.
I can see someone like Ennis on loan and maybe a foreign signing without a preseason and with a wait for a visa. Be amazed if we pay a decent fee for a proven striker that can slot straight in. It just won’t happen. Be happy to be proved wrong…..
Alfie May would have been a perfect foil for either Cosgrove or Watters. I wonder if we were even in the running?
Even if we were what would have been point? We'd never have been able to compete wage wise with Hudds and especially Birmingham
I'd class a top striker as a Sam Winnall quality acquisition. In which case, no, I don't think we'll get one. I, for one, would like to see the club splash a million or so on that type of signing and could believe that they might be prepared to do that. The sticking point, as always, will be wages though. Players of that quality are few and far between and are almost certainly going to go to clubs who, whether they can afford it or not , are willing to substantially outbid us on wages.
