They had some top names for songs back in the day. 99% of all Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd & I Hate Nerys Hughes spring to mind. All I Want for Xmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit too
Not liking a band is one thing, but being this proud of your own ignorance is something else! I'm actually on record on this board as not having been a big fan of REM, but the records are out there and I at least made the effort to listen after they were recommended. I think I liked some and need to revisit others, but I find it really weird to boast that you don't know about something and also can't be bothered to look into it. Just put aside half an hour! You might love it - at least if not then you've got a basis for your opinion other than just not being able to name a record.
it was just a throw away comment based on comments that seem to assume everybody will know an album of theirs that’s all, not in the least bit ‘proud’ of it. I actually like a wide range of music genres but REM have totally passed me by.
ask 100 people to name their favourite REM album and the majority would say Out of time or Automatic for the people. ask on other 100 people their favourite REM song and it would be one of losing my religion, shiny happy people, everybody hurts, it's the end of the world or man on moon. Personally I couldn't name another REM song or Album. I'm sure if summat came on radio I'd know it was REM but the rest must have passed me by.
Green and Document are better albums. Although any of the first ten are classics at a level that most bands fail to reach.
It's a strange one for me regarding REM - because Monster is my favourite album of theirs. I adore Strange Currencies and the first two tracks set the scene after the three acoustic style albums that preceeded. Either way, and depending on personal preference, there's no way anyone can call them rubbish or overrated - objectively speaking they've a fantastic and varied back catalogue with a number of outstanding songs and albums. Still not as good as Oasis though
With the exception of Around the Sun, even the last 5 are at a level most bands could only dream of getting near. Accelerate and Up especially stand up extremely well to the first ten.
