From Swinton coyr could be Rotherham? Just seen the other bloke say he's a big barnsley fan si fair enough. When you set buildings alight with people in your always going to end up getting a big sentence. Do the crime....
Fair enough mate, bet he's sat in his cell regretting that one now. Like I say if you set fire to occupied buildings your going to get a long time.
Totally deserved but also very sad that stupidity once again as ruined his life and probably ruined his parents also . Lad at my work knows him well and apparently he had sorted his life out after getting out of prison and one stupid decision to attend the demonstration and he goes and tries to set fire to the hotel . It’s the innocent family members that I feel sorry for .
It's multiple stupid decisions - believing the far right nonsense in the first place, deciding to attend, deciding to get involved in the trouble, deciding to set a bin on fire etc. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing, it's far from a single moment of stupidity and I have little sympathy. That said I hope he turns it round in prison and emerges ready and able to contribute to society, but with the state of our prison system I doubt it.
Although the system is in a mess, Rehabilitation is mostly down to the individual not the system. As the saying goes You can take a horse to water...
I strongly disagree. If there aren't facilities in place for a person to better themselves whilst inside, or programs for employing ex-cons when they get out how are they meant to do it?
We will have to agree to disagree then. It's like the thread about that stabbing people trying to blame poverty. People passing the re offending onto the prison system. By looks of it this blokes already been to jail once, sorted his life out, re offended that's down to him. That's problem with today world always someone else's fault.
I don't think anyone is saying it's somebody else's fault. My earlier post is clear in saying that this outcome is a result of him making several bad decisions. That's not mutually exclusive with thinking that the prison system should rehabilitate people so that when they come out they're better positioned to make good decisions. Whether you can see it or not your attitude just leads to more and more reoffending. I don't see how that's in anyone's interests.
I get what you're trying to say here mate. But the current system actively tries not to rehabilitate prisoners, so for many they are a victim of circumstance. I have worked with prison charities trying to rehabilitate ex-offenders so know this first hand. Many prisoners are released from prison without an ID or bank account. They either never had one, or they have expired whilst inside. You can't have a bank account without an ID so on release a prisoner needs to apply for a passport which can be a lengthy process for someone with a criminal record. No ID means no bank account, no universal credit, no way to get accommodation, no way to get a legal job and be paid etc. I've seen prisoners released with the very best of intentions, only to become homeless within weeks due to bureaucracy and return to their old ways. If the prison system arranged a bank account and passport for everyone inside it would have a real impact on re-offending rates in this country. There are so many other easy wins like mental health support, courses and educational classes, mentorship and career guidance which can cut our re-offending rate in half. The Tories, lovely people that they are, were not interested in this and created worse criminals and more innocent victims, then of course blamed someone else. Timpson is the best qualified person in the country to be in charge of our prisons, hopefully he can have a real impact.
I did read yesterday that he has previously convictions for racial assault and assaulting an emergency worker. If this is correct, then he has a history of this behaviour and should probably be on a watch list when he is eventually released.
Didn't Braverman stop charities giving tents to released prisoners when they were going to be homeless? So they were forced to sleep rough without any shelter.
https://www.facebook.com/share/v/NmWPJYDLWc7cBrhK/?mibextid=WC7FNe It’s alarming how many people sympathise with and make excuses for the rioters, just as they do with the January 6 mob in America. You won’t change their minds because they mix with like minded people in their day to day.
Brilliant post. There needs to be a much more joined up system & proper funding of the probation service too.
Up for sentencing on December 1st my mate……he’s the one I couldn’t understand…….maybe him losing his Mam sent him over the edge…..not saying what he did is right at all
