We have new neighbours who moved up from "Darn Sarf". The first thing he mentioned was how friendly a majority of people are. All us round him said hey up, offered help etc. He said he commuted for ten years on the same train with the same people and never spoke . He was also amazed how they can get to some beautiful countryside within a 15 minute drive . As for the town centre. The whole family think its great.

A few people mentioning Wentworth - and I'd say avoid if possible. Not that it isn't a beautiful village, but its too busy with visitors and not many houses come up for sale (aren't a lot owned by the estate?) in budget - and if you have 2 cars, you're probably stuffed for parking.

Thorpe Hesley, Harley and Hood Hill that way all look decent, are possibly in budget and with good access to the M1, close to Meadowhall and Barnsley.

Having seen where most people live on this thread, it now makes sense why there are so many rubbish opinions on here.

We used to live in Penistone and loved it. Still think it’s really nice. I know someone who is selling a house there if you’re interested, but it’s not on the market yet, but would obviously get a reds fans discount :)

    Thanks all - really appreciated

I'm going to make a list of everywhere mentioned and count how many times each place has been suggested and go from there

It's the old.. how much money do you.. The more rural the better for me... Penistone.. not far from M1 close to Manchester.. but comes at a price.

Ed.. nearer the mast is fine Denby Dale Holmfirth way, beautiful

Silkstone. Silkstone common. Dodworth. Penistone ( but as said can get cut off in snow) Denby dale. Holmfirth area. Pogmoor and Dodworth for closer to town..also the above are near Canon Hall and the Trans pennine trail. lots of access to North Yorkshire and Derbyshire peaks..

My mum lives on the fringes of Hemsworth towards Ackworth having lived briefly in Athersley and for decades just off Agnes Road.

The last two areas felt like they were going downhill quickly, but where she is now is a lot greener and quieter and there are some lovely stone properties. Loads of garden centres and there seem to be quite a few runs of shops and pubs dotted around.

As others have said, work out your budget, take account of fees, moving costs etc then I'd start using zoopla or Rightmove to look at size of property in a wide area and start to whittle it down from there.

We've been looking to move on and off for a few years and thats what we've done... Though sadly, what we want, in the general area we want it just doesn't seem to exist.

Housing isn’t a problem. The Barnsley area has some of the cheapest housing in the country. Also in the past 30 years things have changed so much for the better and the old lesser areas have improved. As a school governor at three schools I can reassure you there are some exceptionally good schools in the area. Obviously people are proud of their area and will be keen to promote it. I would suggest you come up for a weekend and look around the wider Barnsley area. There are two big Morrisons, Barnsley and Cortonwood. I don’t wish to promote any area but if you need access to the M1 you should look at Tankersley, Hoyland, Worsborough village for jnc 36 or Dodworth, Higham, Pogmoor for Jnc 37.

Wilthorpe, Gawber, Pogmoor all nice areas too. Lots of amenities and close to the town centre and M1.

HD8 is a lot dearer than S75, you get more for your money here and its quieter than Denby Dale and Holmfirth.

I'm from HD8 and probably wouldn't live there now unless it was on the outskirts of a village.
