You can’t get on top of expenditure in football. No one team has.

You have to spend just to stand still, let alone improve.

Clearly the desire is for Championship football - and the costs that go with trying to get there.

That even if the income from Collins. Mads and Kitching is made in chunks, those chunks must be a sizeable monthly amount, one would have thought.

Yes you can by spending only what you make, so the club doesn't end up more and more in debt to owners.

 

I think it's worth highlighting that the few salaries that have been disclosed had a ratchet effect so each season the player got a pay rise.

We've extended contracts for some players, so I suspect Connell and Phillips are probably on decent wages. We've also got a massive squad and the youth ranks to fund.

Given we've paid a little under £750k for Dunn, I suspect he's on good wages too. I'd be very surprised if the costs saved from the freed 4 weren't already swallowed up with bringing in the new guys plus contractual wage rises.

You don't put in £3m of equity if you don't need to.

 

I think we’re currently ensuring we are one of the stronger league one teams with one eye on promotion and I believe we will be in the mix again, but we certainly can’t miss out indefinitely.

I think the owners have a tough job in keeping us competitive and not losing fans, but I think they are managing both for now, so we still have a healthy fan base for the level.

I’d be more worried if they were throwing money at the club to attract bandwagon fans like a few others have. It’s all temporary when you look at Wigan and Reading slowly shrinking back to their humble starting points.

 

We’d be in L2 then. And the fans would be shouting ‘sack the board’ every game.

You have certain fixed costs with running a club and stadium of our size. That can’t really change - and might actually hamper us at times.

Player fee and wages can change - but you get what you pay for.

I agree in essence to not live beyond our means - but that would result in problems on the playing side.

Given that Humphrys came on a free and he chose us, I’m guessing he’s now one of our highest earners. Probably 500k a year.

 

Around 10k a year at this level no chance. I doubt we'd want to pay it anyone if we got promoted.

FFP/SCMP allows for owners to invest by injecting equity rather than loaning to clubs. By injecting equity we'll be able to carry a larger wage bill than we could based upon turnover alone. Still, nearly £14m from the owners and £10m in transfer fees in the past 18 months, that's a lot. Hopefully part of this is about further diluting the shares of Conway and Lee.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong @Archerfield or @Exile but when they raise the money through equity I don't believe it's a debt at all. It's essentially the company (The club) selling shares to raise money and the existing owners purchasing those shares as they have first refusal

 

He didn’t take a cut, he was out of contract so technically was on nothing. Last season Wigan average wage was around £4K according to capology, so can’t see them offering him £6k + when out of contract.

This is slightly misleading as you could argue at least 3 of those aren’t midfielders, one is a coach who is expected to play very little, one has been injured forever and one is on a academy contract and will cost us very little, with a large potential upside
