Who though (on here for example) is doing that Lil ?, despite criticising that as a rotten result and performance. Is anybody now completely writing off this season already ?.
I didn't say anyone had. I simply said that is something I wouldn't do. If the team put in a performance like today's, criticism will automatically follow. However, I do NOT believe it prooves we'll have a poor season.
Yeah that's true of course. But just like the start we made after 4 games, that doesn't/didn't prove we'd win promotion and had the strongest squad etc. Give it 10 games maybe, and then we'll have another look ehh.
I think we have to cut the younger members some slack, as they won’t remember the 1980-81 team, for obvious reasons, but all they have to do is add ‘in the years I’ve been watching the Reds’ after any claim, and then they could have a decent argument. It’s why we’d never say the 80-81 team were the greatest at this level either, as we’ve won the 3rd Division North a couple of times, so the teams must have been handy. If they were better than Norman’s side, however, it’s a shame there’s no footage, as they would have to have been very good indeed. When I’m talking about football I always go from my year zero, which is 1977 (my first game at Oakwell, the first Cup Final I remember watching, the first year I started collecting Panini stickers and Topps cards, reading Shoot and Roy of the Rovers, etc. It means I can still consider Spurs a 2nd division side to start with. And it meant that I didn’t have long to wait for the kind of football that people older than me had waited two decades for. But as for the argument of this squad being the best at this level in recent years, the major drawback for our team now is that we don’t have the out and out goalscoring striker (DKD is a different type of player, despite getting his fair share of goals). The 2016 team had Winnall, whilst Stendel’s team had two, in Woodrow and Moore (who, let’s now forget, each missed 1/3 of the season through injury). When you think of the other players in those teams - a young Hourihane, Mawson, Brownhill, Pinnock, Mowatt, etc, it’s a big claim to say this year’s squad is even the best in recent memory.
