We've got so many better options these days, when it comes to watching match goals, and highlights videos. But remember the days of having to watch Calender (Ytv) and Look North (Bbc), for some brief 20 seconds highlight video!. And yeah Ytv did come up with 'Goals on Sunday' and 'Kickabout!' etc. But away from Yorkshire Tv, we never got the respect did we! ?.
We’ve gone from one extreme to another really. I’ve just watched Fleetwood v Morecambe on the stick. I had the chance to watch it on Sky, or either clubs Ifollow. We’re spoilt for choice! I think my first experience of the TV cameras coming to Oakwell was during Clark’s promotion season. We lost 3-0 to Rochdale. We often used to look in the Telly shop window for the final score or could get hold of a green un. For the latest scores there was always someone at the ground with a tranny radio. That’s how we knew about the Bradford fire when we were away at Oxford.
Hey Fitz, I will be honest, I also got sick of John Helm actually. And I don't like listening to him anymore, in any match where he's the 'fake added on' live commentator.
Somewhere I've still got the annual highlights videos from the 70s and 80s, if that's correct. I may have to dig them out now.
YTV and Look North were always creaming themselves over Leeds, with Wednesday a close second. I still find it amusing how when we beat Leeds at Elland Road in 1990 our goals weren't initially shown, but they showed them hitting the bar etc. The Rochdale game that fitzy mentioned was a right shock to the system. Ponty singing "?yer can shove yer effin cameras up yer arse" was clearly evident. For some reason I've got it in my head that in 77/78 they showed us against Northampton?
Early to mid 90s while at uni remember having to stay up until 1am on a Monday night to watch "Endsleigh league extra" with Elton Wellsby on ITV to catch 20 seconds of grainy coverage. Happy days
I remember back in the 70's, early 80's I'd get int he car with my dad and we'd drive up to the newsagents on Sheffield Road in Birdwell just to get the Green 'Un. Imagine that, a green newspaper put together just for the sports news, how quick must they have had to work to get it written and printed for Saturday evening when games only just finished at 4.45pm (or 5pm for Barnsley, we always seem to finish much later than everyone else).
Well I remember back in the 30's, early 40's when we didn't have any cars, TVs or radios and a lot of us lived under tarpaulin or just holes in the ground. Back then, we had to wait days for them flip books of t'highlights. Imagine that, hundreds of pages of animation was all we had, but we' were happy wi that
Used to wait outside local corner shop for the Green Un arriving at about half 6. On way home from home games we used to call in the office at Prestige Motors where Lowerdale is now between Sheffield Rd and Donny Rd. Bloke in there always had scores on a portable tv.
That Nationwide Football League Extra, presented by Gabriel Clarke, was a good Itv highlights show actually. And I think it started in season '95. But why did it have to be 'relegated' to being shown near midnight, on Monday nights!.
We even get pre- and -post match interviews as well now, with the managers and coaches and players. There's so many options now, compared to relying on Calendar/Ytv (John Helm), and Look North/Harry Gration etc.
That's what angered me about John Helm as well Wuz, with his appalling blatant Leeds and Sheff Wensdy, biased comments. I remember when we beat the leaders West Ham actually, at home in season '90. Steve Agnew did a little flick type free kick, and he did that regularly that season to be honest. The likes of Helm though tried to say he'd been clearly watching Gordon Strachan and Leeds that week. He obviously didn't have a frikkin clue, and didn't care about us!.
Please do dig any videos out. I can put them on dvd for you. I'm sure a few will vouch for me on here.
Harry Gration was worse than John Helm! Seem to recall South Riding sending t'owld Harry quite a strongly worded letter over his bias.
