Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but it strikes me that when he played against us at the beginning of the season he was buzzing everywhere and constantly on the ball. I know he`s being asked to play higher up the pitch but surely we adapt to ensure he gets the ball to feet and play to his strengths. He quite obviously struggles trying to deal with aimless long balls.
To be fair. Mansfield fans did say he can be quite anonymous in games and then pop up with an assist or goal. That looks to be fairly true so far.
We tracked him all summer but are not using him in his best position sadly. Would love to see us go for a midfield diamond as Mansfield did to get the best out of him and get more attacking players on the pitch, sadly I don't think the defence is good enough to play as a back 4.
To play him in his best position would mean dropping Phillips, which I'm not that bothered about as long as someone is scoring the goals, cos he is otherwise anonymous for 89 mins.
Having coveted him all summer it seems daft not to try to get the most out of him. I doubt that will be at the expense of Phillips though - several times I`ve heard DC bigging him up as our star man.
For what he cost he should be adequate in a number of positions. Scoring on debut he looked good. Since then not so much. Against Stockport he was either getting beat to the ball too easily or knocked off it too easily.
Brilliant post If I've not got it wrong sure I heard clarke saying DKD & humps were getting more minutes and getting upto speed ? So DKD played 89mins v us 1st game followed by 90mins v Burton, 62 mins v Lincoln and 2 Cup appearances of 45min and 27mins, so he must suddenly have become unfit since joining us. Stop ******* about bringing the lad off and making wholesale changes
Funny this because after his performance against us for Mansfield, plenty on here said he was anonymous and didn't want him.
You're right. I wasn't that impressed by his performance and couldn't see where he would slot into the side given we already had Phillips. From the snippets I've seen, I still don't see how you get Phillips and Dunn in the side at the same time. Plenty of time for them to develop and potentially find a way to work in tandem, but we certainly can't afford for 2 midfielders to be anonymous in the same game or you end up having about 15% possession.
I think he’s carrying a knock. Clarke said he didn’t train last week. I bet we’re trying to get to the international break & then intend to give him a couple of weeks off (I’m presuming the Reading game will be off)
Partly surprised me at Burton that he got swapped for Jalo considering he hadn’t played at Utd in the week. I did notice that DKD announced he had a newborn in the past couple of weeks. Perhaps he’s not getting the same amount of sleep and not combined well with trying to get settled in a new team.
I don't think so. Phillips is way too weak as a midfielder to play there. His only real attribute is shooting so he's got to be at the top
4 2 3 1 Connell and craig sitting, Phillips behind striker (humphreys) dkd on left, jalo on right interchanging throughout the match. FM at its best.
In my opinion I think our midfield is letting down the strikers and the defence. They seem to all support the strikers leaving the defenders isolated.Far too many times on Saturday there was massive gaps in the middle allowing Stockport a free run going forward.I can't imaging thats anything tactical more a discipline issue. Early days yet and I'm sure it can be sorted.
There’s loads of formations that we could play that would work better than the system we opt to go with and that’s one. Although I would play Russell and Craig holding and a 3 of Phillips/Connell/DKD
