Don't like the last one. Threating is wrong. Abusive is wrong. But insulting someone's religion is hardly a offence in my mind. Maybe I'm over thinking it.
Their No 20 Louis Barry was having a tussle with Cotter in the Disabled stand corner, the fans started singing your just a **** Barry Cotter which was absolutely ludicrous and so misplaced.
Yeah I thought he was making the point it was secatarian rather than racist but it seems he just hadnt heard the Barry Cotter hates the IRA bit of the chant just before the announcement. Ill shut up
It may not be to you if your not religious but some people are so maybe respect other people's views even if they are different to yours? It's the **** the pope part too that will offended, we have players who are Irish and it could offend it's like signing **** Allah or whatever. It's got nothing to do with football and no one wants to hear it.
Exactly - if Mo Salah was playing and fans are singing "F*** Muhammed and the Taliban", its the same thing.
Turn that part of the sentence around about some people are religious therefore you have to respect their views. What if those people chanting are offended by anything religious and are expressing their own views? Surely the religious ones then simply have to respect the views of those chanting. If you are offended by an IRA chant, be offended, what's going to happen? Nothing, just you being offended. Plus if you sympathise with a terrorist group then surely you are thick enough skinned to hear them condemned. We have in the town centre, two or three groups of religious (lets call them preachers), booming out their voices on loud speakers. Who is telling these people to stop just in case it offends atheists? Being offended is a personal subjective thing and unique to the individual. You can't be offended for someone else, that's ludicrous. Plus what if someone is offended by the fact that you find something they say offensive? What are we playing offended top trumps? Unless you are a mute, it is impossible to respect everyones views. Somewhere along the line you will offend someone. That doesn't mean one person is right and the other wrong. Who gets to decide?
Right so if it's abusive or threatening I agree people should be allowed a certain amount of respect for their religious views. However insulting pretty much covers everything else. A religious person may be insulted if I tell them that their religion is made up. Now appreciate that's not very likely to come up in a chant but that was the point I was making.
No that would be abusive and to some extent threating. Now I know this would never happen but hypothetically would it be wrong if we had a chant saying all religion is made up and when you die that's it? Because a religious person could find that insulting however it's not threatening or abusive.
But again like I said in my 1st post it's about respecting other people's views even if you don't agree/believe in them. Telling someone there religion is made up isn't been respectful is it.
No it isn't. And that's the point. We should respect people's rights to hold whatever views they like. But we should be allowed to challenge them. The bible gives advice on how to treat your slaves. Would you respect someone's right to have slaves? What if someone's view is women should be subservient to Men? Would you respect their right to that view? Feeling insulted should not be protected by law. If your beliefs can't stand up to challenge its probably your beliefs should examine not the person challenging. Most religious people I know would be absolutely fine with me telling them I think their religion is made up.
I've heard the Pope was watching the match on Sky and was deeply offended. He's so incensed he's going to excommunicate Barnsley fans for life for gross heresy. As for the IRA we'll just have to watch out for men in balaclavas on Grove Street on Tuesday night. Oh and the Yorkshire Ripper is also deeply offended.
It's not really threatening. Potentially abusive but depends on the context. It's actually the words to a wonderful Tim Minchin song ironically. The context with IRA is something I'd rather not hear at a football match and runs a little deeper.
Interesting bit of trivia, do know why Catholic priests are referred to as father? Daddy would be too obvious.
