When posting about the Thurnscoe Hotel on another thread, I googled the pub and found that it has been demolished. But I was shocked to see that the only other pub in Thurnscoe was The Butchers Arms along with a new micro pub The Thurnscoe Tap. Most of the Working Men's Clubs are still there but places like The Fairway (where we used to go to see live bands) and The Whinwood are long gone.

Pub games been on its arse for years now. I actually live in a village in Barnsley that currently has no pubs. Its pretty depressing.

The only place I know that still has a few pubs is Elsecar.

We’ve got loads in the racist part of town. Perhaps there’s a correlation.

I live in Stairfoot and this was our pub crawl, particularly on New years Eve:
Meet in Ardsley House Public Bar, Gone
Then across to The Pheasant, Gone
Then into Oaks WMC, (known to us as Dirty Dicks) Still there
Then down the hill into the Coach And Horses. Gone
Then down into the Cross Keys, ( Now Macdonalds)
Across to the Keel, Still There
Then up to the Low Club (Ardsley WMC ) Gone
Then finish the night in the Black Bull, Gone.
The number of pubs and clubs that have gone is unbelievable. Ardsley just has the Oaks Club, Stairfoot has the Keel and the Cons club.
Just further up the road on the massive Kendray estate only the Barnsley Central WMC remains. Gone are the Ashfield WMC, The Paddys, The Kendray Hotel, And further up The Yews.Edit. Forgot about Farm Road Club

These pubs haven't been taken away from you, they've closed because of lack of custom. People don't go boozing like they used to.

Not true in all cases. They went because of mismanagement. The Black Bull is a classic example of that. It was doing just fine until the group who owned it decided to mess the Landlord around. Cross Keys was popular, but the apparently the owners received an offer from McDs that they couldn’t resist

I think there is 6 pubs in thurnscoe mate. Also, if you add the pubs up in Thurnscoe, Goldthorpe and Bolton I think there’s a decent amount, maybe 20ish? So it’s not the worst area for the lack of pubs, granted not what it used to be.

But you are right, I have noticed driving through villages a lot of old pubs turned into shops & shared housing.

The micro pub seems to be the new fashion.

Isn't there only 4 pubs in Elsecar? (Market, Milton, Crown & Cobcar) Hoyland & Hoyland Common both seem to have a lot more.

29 pubs close every week, some maybe through mismanagement, but not the majority.

It's the price of Beer and the shutting down of local industries, for me.

I worked near to the steelworks at Rotherham for a while. The pub near there (Station Hotel) used to have steelworkers dropping in before work for a lunchtime pint - until they started breathalyzing them at work. It closed at lunchtime not long after...
