Yesterday marked the end of power generation from coal in the UK with the closure of Ratcliffe Power station. We were the first to generate electricity from coal in the 19th century and we are the first major economy to close all coal fired power stations. It would have been hard to imagine back in 1979 when Alan Clarke took the squad down the pit to show them what a day's work looked like....

With the closing of the furnaces at Port Talbot it seems like the end of the 19th Century Industrial Revolution. Unfortunately, unlike the 1800s I don't see us at the forefront of the new Industrial Revolution because of the lack of a clear steer from Governments of all persuasions. We're playing catch up and many of our manufacturing plants for green energy are foreign owned.

What I love is the fact that every day a massive train goes passed my house on its way to Drax from the Southern United States so it can burn wood pellets - but thanks to the tricks of accounting it is classed as carbon neutral.

I understand that the new government is planning to change the rules about wood pellets.

And rightly so, once we have used all the rest of the worlds resources we will still have our coal to burn.

Darrell Clarke will be taking all the players to Skeggy to see some off shore turbines and some more Donkeys.

And the Yorkshire Post keeps trumpeting it as if it's some kind green, eco friendly super facility.
