https://nypost.com/2024/10/09/us-news/stubborn-floridians-are-refusing-to-evacuate/ These fools have decided to hang around like idiots. It could be the worst one ever seen. Lives are going to be destroyed, nevermind properties.
I’m not sure some people have got a lot of choice? How much support is the government giving people to evacuate - you can be sure all the hotels within a several hour drive are all full. Most Americans don’t have more then $500 to spare on unforeseen costs according to surveys done. Who’s paying for them to not go to work? To get to wherever it is they need to get to?
They were giving those affected by the last storm $750 as an initial payment. I’m pretty sure there will be some financial help included with effort to get them to safety.
I have never been to the US but have been reading postings from people who know the place well, who say that Florida is one of the worst states for the disparity between the have's and the have not's. Inland, many people live in poverty on trailer parks. Hope they have managed to get out because their chances of a good outcome, seeing it out in a trailor, are not high
Fairly certain that was per household though, not per person. Mass traffic on motorways, fuel at petrol stations running out, electric vehicles too. DeSantis has actually done a good job there to be fair, him and Biden are doing good work together. I know they have refuge centers for people to go but there's still a massive issue from the previous storm a tiny while ago
I’m currently in a bar in Ludlow Vermont where there’sa discussion going on about this very subject. It seems that in 2023 the Green Mountains around here has a serious forest fire and virtually everyone evacuated without a word said. After the warnings everyone else buggered off. So as you can imagine there’s not any sympathy for those that won’t leave.
If you have children then you should leave for their sakes. The 63 year old is old enough to make his own decisions. One of the best things about being born here is our temperate climate, we are very lucky.
A number of Florida Republicans voted to not give FEMA extra money *the day before* Milton became a hurricane (to make Biden and by extension Harris look bad). They don't believe in climate change and quite a few are saying publicly that they think the government made the hurricane and sent it to Florida to try to win votes before the election...
Seeing all the British on holiday over there on the news this morning reporting how worried they are, I do wonder why they've gone on holiday to Florida at this time of year.
There's more than a few, quite a big list. Worryingly there is a lot of absolute idiotic brain donating buffoons that believe that b0llox about manufacturing hurricanes.
Probably taking advantage of the cheaper flights. Except now they know why the flights were cheaper...
I know a Milton. Drinks in Windmill in Pontefract. Man Utd fan, would have played for Leeds if his knee held out and he's an absolute w@n ker.
With respect. Cos I don't know. Would the evacuation of the area be minuscule in numbers compared to the request of 5 million to go to safer ground. The traffic situation. Fuel requirements etc were said to be possibly as dangerous in lots of cases. Imagine stuck in a car going nowhere. Those killed early doors were killed on the east coast by developing tornadoes. Let's hope casualties have been at a minimum. Statement on a news report. As lots feared prior to the storm. Afraid to leave or stay. This city is inundated. People who want to get out really have no way to because there’s nowhere to find petrol.
I reckon a decent subway system would come in handy for events like this. Vertical evacuation like the war. Would save lots of money, keep the roads clear and avoid upheaval. Obviously you don't want to do that too near the coast. Maybe evacuate the coastal areas and barricade the Cities.
