I met the real Val Doonican when he visited St. Joseph's Catholic School in Kendray when I was a student there.

It would be. I was born in 1959 and moved to Mexborough when I was about nine, so that makes sense.

He used to be a friend of a family that lived in Kendray at the junction of Donny Road and Lambert Road. We lived just further up the street. Saw him walking down their path once. I do have other claims to fame:)

My grandparents lived just off Doncaster Road; a couple of houses up Redhill Avenue.

I too was there that day.Funny enough I never told my mam because according to her Catholics were from another planet and not people to talk to.

Its true though SFOTyke. On the street I was brought up on we had a family who lived straight across from us who were Catholics and we weren't allowed to mix or talk to them.Obviously as I got older the barriers came down and I was life long friends with them all.Unfortunatly I don't think theres any of the family still living.

My late Dad was very instrumental in setting that up. He knew Val's relations in Kendray well. I think there was a pretty big turnout on the day as Val was close to the top of the charts (or "hit parade", as we used to call it!) I can't remember whether it was during Fr Cashman's or Fr Tomblin's time.

Forgot to add Phil Chambers played in that game.

Funny but I didn’t have you as old as that SFO - got you as being a bit of wizz-kid in SF. Turns out I’m now thinking you must be from the Flower Power generation!

Mi Mrs (met int Jesters 1974) and her siblings were born in same era as you. Lived on Hamden rd. Across from The football/cricket ground. And an old Jumper had the fish shop on Donny rd. Barry Sharman.
