I was made redundant half way through last month. I’ve secured a new role, going back to contracting, start next week.

But the last few weeks have been eye opening.

Daytime tv. Good grief. Forget winter fuel allowance, we need to sort this out for the pensioners and those too infirm to go out.

I’m currently sat at my nannas as she has BG coming out to replace a radiator. After watching Lorraine do an article with her daughter and granddaughter - which involved a baby crying and being sick, followed by Jilly Cooper talking about the tv show coming up on Disney which involves ‘boobies and winkies’ - we have an article on this morning now about the ‘real life’ Addams Family. A family of crackpots who turned up in a hearse. The daughter thinks she can ‘see energy’ and they have a dress from America that is haunted.

    Is this the norm?

Thankfully my mum has just got here so I’m relieved from waiting for the gas man, so I’m off home to watch the cricket before Martin bloody Lewis comes on to condescend to people.

Yep. Absolutely normal brain numbing drivel on day time tv.
Enough to force me out to the pub. And it works.

I’m still in the pub when the evening dross is broadcast.

There's tripe on show any time of the day or night - daytime does not have the monopoly.

There are some good repeats on though if you like that kind of stuff - London's Burning, Howards' Way, Heartbeat are some examples. I know these are not for everybody but I'd watch any of these before garbage like Lorraine/Loose Women etc etc.

And all the adverts about life insurance, stair lifts, walk in baths, pure cremation. Etc etc.

If you have to stay in and watch TV there are loads of old box sets you can watch on iplayer, my5, ITVX etc and it's amazing what you can get interested in on YouTube. Eg I've been watching Mr Drone on his channel where he's followed the building of the new Everton stadium from scratch. I'm not a civil engineer but found it really interesting.

Yes, there's an excess of that in between the programmes I mentioned above but that's easily solved by setting the recorder and only watching on FF when it comes to the advert breaks. That goes for any commercial station for me - I never watch anything live on these channels as I cannot stand five minute ad breaks every 10 or 15 minutes.

I hate Heartbeat. That ***** theme song always signalled the end of the weekend and school in the morning. I have a Pavlovian sense of dread whenever I hear it.

Gets no better after 3pm. When heading into the kitchen to make a drink whilst working, I sometimes catch my wife watching Tipping Point. Still can't believe they made a game show out of shove ha'penny.

Not sure I agree, there are some very good shows on at the moment, particularly Ludvig on the BBC and (I'm led to believe, not seen it yet) Joan on ITV.

On the down side we've got Strictly and next month I'm a Celeb, so maybe you're right.
