Yep, I only knew because a couple of weeks ago (on a quiz!) I said Bayern too. Guirassy with 28 goals & Undav with 18 - incredible partnership!

A good appointment and a real surprise that the fogies in the FA would give the job to someone who can speak their own mind, and may upset the press.

I used to have the naive thought, that our Intl manager always should be English.
And that seems ridiculous and old fashioned now doesn't it, because it should of course be somebody from anywhere, IF he's good enough.
I don't know much about Tommy Tuchel, but I'm sure I and we are going to find out a lot about him now, if he's got the job.
I say a genuine good luck to him. :)

Whether he performs or not, I agree with people above, fair play to the FA. They've got the best available in my opinion (assuming Klopp & Guardiola weren't interested or not available yet)

But Southgate also set a record that tournament for the most defeats for England in a World Cup Finals tournament, with 3. We got to the semi-finals, but we only won three games all tournament, against Tunisia, Panama and Sweden. The other semi-finalists were:

    - France, who beat Australia, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Belgium and Croatia, winning the tournament
    - Croatia, who beat Iceland, Nigeria, Argentina and England
    - Belgium, who beat Panama, Tunisia, Japan, Brazil and England, twice.

We really did have an easy path to the semis, losing to both teams who were any good.

I think it's time we looked at why British managers in British football never make the grade. Generally they get appointed to stave of relegation. We've invested in developing players and the number of very talented young England players is looking very healthy. We now need to look at how to develop young British managers.

In the last 3 seasons, we've had 3 British managers:
1 got us to the play off finals, left for an opportunity at a higher level and was sacked in months. He is now at a local rival and regularly gets abuse on here.
1 was sacked with 1 game left while we were in a play off place after some fans were calling for him to be sacked for most of the season
1 has fans calling for him to be sacked after less than 20 games after a mid-table start.

    I doubt we are unique.

Developing young British managers for the national side is against the interest of fans of most clubs who demand immediate success.

Daily Mail not mincing their words. They are right with a few points. We are supposedly a Football powerhouse, so why can do we struggle to produce English managers who win things? I get the German thing too. If we play them and win with him as coach it won't feel the same. It's always good beating the Germany team, but being coached by one to beat them won't feel as good.

He's a bit hot and cold, he puts out a team that is either brilliant or crap, not much consistency IMHO.

I was surprised to learn the other day that a "foreign" manager has never won the World Cup.

All that really matters is if he succeeds on the pitch or not, personally I'd find it highly amusing if we beat the Germans with a German manager. We have a German king afterall.

True Scoff but we also call for the head of virtually all our managers. it's also true with a very few exceptions that every manager gets sacked in the end. One of my points is that at some point ( with a few exceptions) someone took a chance on these so called elite managers. If Eddie Howe had done as well with a lower mid table side in Spain or Italy he'd av been on the radar of chelsea or arsenal or quite a few leading clubs here. yet recently there was a discussion on radio about wether he'll last the season at Newcastle..What managerial CV did Arteta have besides carrying Peps pencil case but he was appointed and more importantly supported till he got up and running. we need to be getting British
( yes British not just English) coaches to the level where they considered for the top clubs and eventually England..I emphasise British cos I'd have welcomed Ferggie with open arms..
    Tin hat at the ready....

Solid appointment. I can’t think of anybody out of work, or anybody in work that the FA could attract, that would be much better than Tuchel. He has knowledge of the English game, and a good record in knock-out tournaments. Not to mention that he has a tendency to go a bit batsh!t, which will be a massive contrast to Gareth.

The answer to where are the English Managers for me is simple, the vast majority of clubs in the PL and probably lower are not owned by English people.
Thats not meant to be rascist but they won’t be England fans and their priorities are not the the English FA and it’s team but their own club, so they go for a perceived proven formula from the Management carousel as opposed to investing in young English Manager/Coaches.
