Chateauneuf de Pape or Chateuneuf du Pape

If the latter at £6 per bottle is an unbelievable price if it’s the real stuff

Never been a huge fan of the old vino rouge - once got hammered in my mid teens on a bottle of red which tasted like inferior sarson’s to my pallet.

It turned out to be a pretty expensive (£20+ over 25 years ago) bottle of imported Chateauneuf du pape my grandad had been gifted by his brother in law.

He was furious with me - until a couple of weeks later great uncle Alec sent him another one (he had a case), I was round for Sunday dinner - he tried it, and concurred with my view that it was shi.te vinegar in a posh bottle - and used it up in the week in a couple of recipes (suspect some was used to clear the drains tbh) and he opened a three quid bottle of Merlot from Morrisons which was unanimously decided to be much nicer!

Had the odd glass since with meals when out at someone’s house but I only ever buy red for my mum and step dad these days. And never Chateauneuf du pape…

At the Trades Club, watching The High Llamas and working my way through their excellent range of subsidised ales.

£6 for Chateauneuf du pape? What was it, a miniature?

Sounds like it was corked from what you’ve described. It tasted like vinegar because that’s what it had deteriorated to.

Nice drop of Barolo to celebrate here. Any excuse to drink what I had put aside to enjoy at Christmas.
