Jack Shepherd has signed a new two-year deal with the Reds, with a Club option of a third year, and will link up with Bradford City for the 24/25 campaign.

The 23-year-old arrived at Oakwell from Pontefract Collieries last summer, immediately making an impression and playing 13 times for the Reds during the first half of his debut campaign.

The defender joined Cheltenham Town on loan for the remainder of the 23/24 season, working with former Robins boss and current Barnsley Head Coach Darrell Clarke, scoring his first league goal and adding 12 more appearances to his tally whilst in Gloucestershire.

Now penning a further two years at Oakwell, Shepherd will continue his development with Sky Bet League Two outfit Bradford at Valley Parade this season.

Sporting Director, Mladen Sormaz commented on the move: “Jack made a big step up into league football last season and we want to continue his development. What he needs this season is a lot of games, and we feel League Two is the right standard. Bradford are a good club to bring him on and we will see how he develops this campaign.”

Congratulations, Jack, and the best of luck for the upcoming season with Bradford City.

Makes sense to me. Clarke will know him as well as anyone.

Great news this. Shepherd definitely has potential and given his career path hasn't been a conventional one (similar to Marc Roberts) he might develop a bit later. He's contracted to us for another 3 years essentially now, so a good spell in the league below might be just what he needs.

Last season in spells, Shepherd looked championship level, and in other's he looked every inch the Ponte Collieries player. His debut at home to Port Vale was fantastic, and one of the best of any debutant for a long while. We were fortunate to be 2 up at half time, and a lot of that was testimony to him. Ironically, his worst game was at Bradford.

My only concern now is that Earl is the only left footed centre half we have, and for me the jury is still out on him.

Unless I’m getting confused here, didn’t he come on with about 10/15 minutes to go against Port Vale? He did look decent but their players were done for at that point.

I do agree about the differences in his levels though. I remember Wigan away he looked particularly good. He does seem to have a bit of a clanger in him but hopefully some game time at Bradford will help with that.

I think it’s a good move and hopefully he will play a good number of matches and minutes.

Be interesting to see now who would play left centre back if Earl isn’t. Maybe Clarke would change the formation if that were to happen.

My apologies, you are right. I must have been thinking of a different game. I thought he'd replaced O'Keeffe who went off injured early doors.

No worries! Yeah he did go off injured, I think just after his decent assist?

With Shepherd I’m pretty sure he had a good few away games early on but always seemed to then drop out of the team/squad. Be good for him to get a good run of games.

    Good luck young man.
If he can regularly play as well as he did at Wigan last season. (My MOTM). He's got a decent future ahead of him.

Surely we’re bringing in a left sided centre half now then? Only Earl to fill that role and he’s been dodgy to say the least since giving the injury time pen away against Bolton.

Unless we do switch to a 4-2-3-1.
Looks like Darrel hasn’t ruled it out.

Tbf to him, he didn’t do a great deal wrong in most of the games he played. Certainly played some decent passes out from the back, and even carried the ball well on occasion.

I think Bradford is a great place for a loan, as they’re a big club for the level and are well supported. Get those fans onside and he’ll grow in confidence.

Yeah hopefully Bradford’s style of play will suit him and let him use the ball out of defence.

I think there may have been one home game where it was quite bad, maybe Carlisle? Got away with it though. Then Bradford in the EFL cup he wasn’t great either but didn’t get away with it. I would say he had more good games than bad and certainly didn’t disgrace himself, especially given how many tiers his step up was. Hopefully his loan spell is successful and he can come back here and push for the team.
