Looking through all 4 divisions, they were quite a number of players that had either played for Barnsley or were to become future reds players
Just had the fear of God put in to me reading that list. We were up against them buggers every week. It was properly frightening.
Not if we had the likes of Macca Evans Futcher Taggart eg at the back. These lot today couldn't lace their boots and are on much more money too.
Me neither. I didn't realise he only cost Tranmere £250k from Real Sociedad in 1991. Given he scored 138 for them, that must be one of the best bits of transfer business ever.
I used to always remember the pre-match chatter about Billy Whitehurst and Keith Edwards but I never remember either having a good game against us at the ‘well. That could be my memory, mindst.
I'm guessing Pallister and Mowbray might have been making their way into first team ranks around then for them.
Mick McCarthy told a tale about Billy Whitehurst the other night. Every corner or contact Billy would smash or elbow Mick.In the end Mick thought I'm not wearing this .So at the next encounter he gave Billy an absolute corker full power the job lot.Billy looked at him and never flinched he just growled back at him.Mick kept his distance after that.He said Billy was one of his hardest opponents.
There are some great players in all four divisions. Just in the 4th there are: Trevor Senior Tony Adcock Jimmy Quinn Lawrie Sanchez Glynn Snodin Ian Snodin Paul Stewart Keith Houchen All went on to have great careers much higher up the league.
Whitehurst had a young Gerry Taggart bricking it and refusing to leave the pitch at the end, cos Whitehurst was waiting up the tunnel for him, after Taggart had clattered him during the match. Mal Shotton had to go and have a word with Whitehurst to get him to lay off Taggart, but he was told to inform Taggart that if he ever did it again there’d be trouble!
