SO, is Clarke implementing the high press style?

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating for the sole use of it and rigidity. I hate how football has gone.

I'm just saying that there's more things wrong at the club than the "spreadsheet" so to speak.

But you have to take the comment about ‘being average’ in context. It was part of a reply to a fan who suggested we are no better than a mid table club. I think it was one of the first questions of the night.

This is pretty much where I'm at, I'm a Barnsley supporter and I will always be 8 to my first game at 8yrs old cost 50p and my dad lifted me over the turnstile, 1980. And I reminisce a lot with my pals about the good times and the bad times but it seems so utterly pointless now Barnsley FC have been a huge part of my life, and will continue to follow but my flame doesn't burn as bright life changes and the ownership strategy of selling our best players just to keep the balance sheet positive - what manager is going to stay in those circumstances, everytime we get a decent manager first whiff of a decent offer and he will fk off. The whole formula is wrong, completely flawed, I don't trust or believe anything that comes out of the club so I've stepped away and I attend other games where I feel a stronger connection.

I've got some data for you Mr Flatman

1 home League win since February

What's the plan to sort it out? because that's where the bulk of £3m turnover customer base view the product on offer

I don't know, but I guess that's the point of what the numbers say. Having a man on the halfway line correlates to conceding more goals than not having him on the halfway line and doesn't correlate in more goals, or, doesn't outweigh goals conceded.

Again, just conjecture about this is I've not seen the numbers...

You're right but the data isn't based on a pretty poor goalkeeper from Chelsea under 13s who can't command his box if his life depends on it or on having a 5 foot tall jalo standing in the box looking like a lost boy and serving absolutely no use defensively. That's one of the biggest reasons I think we go wrong. We take data that applies to absolute elite level footballers and try to apply it to lower league plodders. We aren't alone in that though, the football world as a whole has been fooled into believing that a team of nobodies can replicate the tactics and skillset of the best footballers in the world and they just can't.

Data says that quickest way to drive a formula one car is taking a very specific line and putting at set points but we all know that quite often that's not the case and the individual skills of the driver may counter what is considered the data driven best line.

Data definitely has it's merits but it's foolish to blindly follow the data when it isn't tailored specifically for your exact players against the exact players you're playing against and I don't believe that Barnsley have a big enough data set to accurately state the most effective way to defend a corner against Charlton athletic when our starting 11 have never met their starting 11 before as a group. And that's where the data isn't as reliable as common sense and managerial ability. In my opinion of course

I've seen the numbers and they're extremely marginal. They also don't allow for any variance between John stones and MDGs ability. Last season they also didn't align with the raw facts from Barnsley games when I looked at our stats.

    You're absolutely correct.

There's nothing worse than watching a League One centre half try and play out from the back because Pep said so, making a complete ******** of it, conceding a stupid goal, then doing it again.

Oh and the irony of someone watching Man City because of the lack of truth from Barnsley is superb.

It's why I absolutely hate st George's park or whatever it's called and the classroom churning out identikit manager after manager who are all taught to play tippy happy football because it's what the most successful team does so it MUST work.

I'm no football expert by any level but I'll tell you now, if we signed a player who is willing to run down the wing and skin players before whipping a fast ball into the box then we'd absolutely murder any team in the league despite the stats saying the best way to attack is a slow build up play and wait till the opposition makes a mistake.

We'd also sell a **** load more tickets. It's absolutely no coincidence that Adam Hammill and Martin Devaney are loved by Barnsley fans but data says their abilities aren't any good because they're not reyt good at turning round and passing to a defender.

I bloody hate modern football sometimes.

I think it's bloody weird when someone claims to be a Barnsley fan yet constantly posts about another team and takes a sick perverted pleasure in trying to wind Barnsley fans up about their love for another club.

I am quite tickled that anyone could think we have a player that we could leave up the field when defending a corner, who would be capable of winning the ball and holding it up to prevent it coming straight back to our box. I certainly don’t know which of our players would fit that bill!

it’s always funny when I hear someone in the crowd saying “I was always taught you should have someone on the post at a corner”. So, said fan, whose footy career never got him any further than the school team, was told by a geography teacher who also looked after the U14s school team, in 1983, that you should have a player on the post, and because he was told that, he therefore knows better than a professional football coach, in 2024, who has pages and pages of data that shows that having someone on each post may save 1-2 goals per season, whereas instead placing a defender on the edge of the 6 yard box in front of the corner taker, which our geography/games teacher never taught us to do in 1983, stops about 50% of balls from corners even getting near the goal.

All that's been said over last few days by our chairman and directors has summed up nicely exactly all that is wrong with football these days. I'm sure they were well meaning in giving such detail, but to me all it's done is rubber stamp how happy I am that I didn't waste money on a ST, and has cemented my belief that football just doesn't mean much to me anymore.

Why don't you think we have anyone who can beat another player to the ball? Is our sole aim in football now to simply hold a ball up?

I may not rate max watters but I reckon he could occasionally outpace a defender running up the field to score a goal. I reckon jalo might be of more use taking an additional opposition player out of the box than he is marking a 6 foot striker in our box too

Sean Dyche had Trippier on the post at every corner...he saved a stack of goals from being scored.

    Agree.

It winds me up - but yes, top Prem Teams do the same, so it’s obviously proven.

The idea is to win and then retain possession when defending a set piece and push forward from there.

Hoofing it out to Cosgrove won’t do anything, as he can’t retain a ball anyway.

I think the theory of the man on the post is that he plays everyone onside should there be a deflection or a knock down.

But the extra body in the box means the attacking team have extra bodies in the box also. Leaving a man up means the attacking team have to leave two marking him.
