There was a thread other day by dwlc about saving the planet this sort of thing shouldn't be happening we should be encouraging more to use public transport to get to work.

You are right Red Rum we should be encouraging more people to use public transport.
But I honestly don't know anyone who uses public transport to go to work.

You'll be moaning about tax rises to pay for things next.

I noted a few weeks ago there was a story about £100m spaffed by DePfeffel Johnson on a scheme in 2020 that was supposed to upgrade buses to emit much less (up to 80%). The scheme was evaluated and it was found the work done made negligible difference and was therefore cancelled. I suspect our bus network in large parts of the country is still highly polluting.

Of course, it's down to the bus companies what price they charge. In London under TfL, prices are currently £1.70 for a single fare or, multi journeys within the space of an hour.

But how do things get paid for without taxes?

Same as we pay for everything else. We ask the bank of mum and dad (the Bank of England) to print some money, that we then use taxes to control spending and inflation by removing the money we created from circulation.

With the new £3 price that would cost £30 a week . Petrol cost per week about a tenner

Buses are all well and good but I can get to work by car in 20 minutes or less. By bus it's a two bus journey (or one and a 20 minute walk) that takes approx 50-55 minutes.

Without better infrastructure and more convenient running schedules people are very unlikely to make the change.

I had the same issue when I worked in Rotherham. It was a 15 minutes drive, or an hour on the bus with two 1km walks at either end. It was borderline whether the bus would be faster than walking.

Just saying what my experience is - of course a village isn't like a city. Tell that to the others who have also said the same like Jampdrop did - honestly! Plenty like me who would struggle getting to work without a bus service

They do do monthly passes. For regular travellers. That are far less than single trip.
As for petrol how about parking fees. It's a bit disingenuous without all the facts on what is cheaper for regular users.

My pass is 20 a week - monthly would be 63
