We rarely ever beat Birmingham at home in those days, and the 0-0 against them was an awful 2 points dropped for us. It felt like a defeat, especially seeing as (I think) we missed out on the Play offs by just 2 points!!. That loss at Chelsea btw, didn't we take the lead twice, but Kerry Dixon eventually scored 4 in their 5-3 win. Yeah that was the original Chelsea Fc lol, before they were taken over by foreign owners and managers and players!. And the 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth was a killer for us, with Luther Blissett still scoring regularly for them in those days.
Ar can remember a cheeky Macdonald lob at that Chelsea game. Not sure if went 2-1 up.with it? One of my mates took a great pic of the goal.going in
I do remember us playing in the all white n red kit that day, for no reason whatsoever!. Chelsea wore all blue n white, so where was the red kit!. We both wore our normal home kits when they came to Oakwell, twice that season.
We wore red in 81/82 ... beat 'em 2-1... and was a tense day on the terraces and after the game. Before; 100 of us had a great sesh with them in a pub just off the Fulham Road
Yeah I bet you did Wuz lol, and I like the word 'sesh' (session) btw, we should use it a lot more on here ehh. But this subject annoys the hell out of me, when both teams in footy can wear their normal kits/colours, but they don't for some reason!.
Remember it well. Great day but like you say, scary at times! It was 43 years to the day last week. Found this photo of us in the away end that day:-
Ahh the classic red n white early 80s thing, brings back great memories for me, when I was a kid then.
Great pic mate. Never realised there were so many of us.... there were small pockets of Chelsea kicking it off in that end throughout the game.
Remember that season, when David Currie scored 4 when we beat Bournemouth 5-2. That was the first ever time I'd seen one of our players score 4 in a game!. Just think of Cooper n Currie up front ehh, what an impressive handful they were as a strike partnership. And before he was crocked!, we had Gwyn Thomas doing the Darren Sheridan role, of hard graft and winning the ball, and giving it to Steve Agnew. We had Paul Futch and Mal Shotton at the back (with about 100 years between them lol), and the always dependable Clive Baker in goal. Yeah, the memories really do go on...
I think this was the debut season for the kid Carl Tiler. And I also think it was when we signed a certain Scotch 'Blackadder' lookalike player lol, called Owen Archdeacon. It was a real disappointment though when we sold the popular 'Bez' John Beresford, cheaply, on transfer deadline day, to Portsmouth. And I thought it was hilarious on the night when we did Stoke in the Fa Replay. Our fans were giving their fans some really helpful advice, what and where they could stick their pink panthers!.
In the Chelsea cup game, Agnew got 2 goals .. one of which was a header !!!!! Chelsea were joint top and unbeaten in their last 13 games.
One of my favourite seasons watching us. 14 going on 15 at the time, football was just football and nothing more. We had a decent side and played some decent attacking football most of the time, and the cup games were unforgettable. Bit of a Steve Cooper love in too, aside from his cup goal v Stoke, he started off with a last minute equaliser away at Oldham in the first match of the season. Also remember a bullet header at home to Ipswich in the October, and in the same game he also scored a beauty when he seemed to bring a ball down with his right foot and score with his left in the same movement. And also remember vividly a 35 yard chip he scored at home v Sunderland around Easter time. Never seen footage of any of those goals apart from the Stoke one. Very happy days.
Hey Meta, yeah big Stevie Coops put himself about didn't he, and it was great to be a fan at that time. I used to joke that the more hair that Agnew lost, the better he became as a player. Btw I can't remember (without checking) who did we play in the 'Simod' cup that season, the former Full Members cup ?.
