If you like your fish n chips, where is your go to place? We used to use Shaws up Dodworth but they seemed to go down hill quality wise over past year. YPas up Kex not bad but fish portions are like sticklebacks. Our go to place now is Catch up at Monk Bretton. Lovely. Had a couple of their homemade curries as well, defo worth a try.
I don’t mind Oh my vid on Gawber Road, I got some other week from that one near the Mount, absolutely extortionate……..chips fish cake and peas, £7.20
This almost feels like sacrilege to say. When I lived up there and when my mum lived central, we'd tried loads of different chippies but I was never overly impressed with any of them. Some were decent for a while but seemed really inconsistent. Keelings, Darns, the one on Agnes Road before it changed hands then became a Chinese. The little one up Warren Quarry Lane (really good fish awful chips), Shaws. Similarly, we've tried quite a few locally and until about 5 years ago were unimpressed to the point we didn't really have them. Then we heard Jay Rayner raving about Kens in Herne Hill so we thought we'd give them a try. Seriously seriously good. Crisp, fresh, abundant, even when getting them from deliveroo they keep their crispness. The only other ones I've had on a par were in Whitstable, think they were called VC Jones and they still used beef dripping to cook the fish, though not been there for a long time so no idea if they've stood the test of time. Oh, and an honourable mention to Park View Fisheries towards Featherstone.
I’ve only just started considering eating them again. Covid fecked up my taste and smell for so long that they tasted really bad for years. Rare we have them now though, and I find they sit really heavy. Almost always regret bothering after really fancying them.
