Barnsley FC Women got back to winning ways on home soil, as they defeated Norton & Stockton Ancients 4-1 on the Oakwell Showcase Pitch.

Jess Horsley’s side impressed from the outset, with Louise Biggins coming close to an early opener after three minutes, when she won possession in midfield, and delivered a through ball into the path of strike partner, Lissa Woodhouse, however, the ball was collected by the Norton stopper before the forward was able to seize upon the opportunity.

Five minutes later, the midfield duo of Freya Walton and Ruby Jex-Oldfield combined in a flowing attacking move, to give the latter a chance to open the scoring for the Reds, but the Barnsley number 16's subsequent eighteen-yard effort could only be directed over the crossbar.

The visitors thought they had put the ball into the back of the net in the 11th minute through the forward Jamieson, being denied by the official’s flag as she was adjudged to be in an offside position.

This potential setback appeared to buoy Barnsley, and two minutes later, Woodhouse found the breakthrough, getting onto the end of an Alayna Millard ball in the area and firing home to give the Reds the advantage.

Norton & Stockton Ancients attempted to rally back from this one-goal deficit, and in the 25th minute, Jamieson had a chance from 12 yards out, being thwarted by outstanding reflexes from Reds ‘keeper, Becky Flaherty. Flaherty was on hand once more as half time approached, producing an outstanding parry to thwart Norton captain Owens from close range.

Despite this set of chances for the opposition, the Reds continued to dominate in possession, and this paid dividends with two minutes to go in the half, as Biggins doubled the scoring. Receiving the ball inside the area, the forward slammed home a powerful effort from the right hand side of the box, which comfortably beat Norton stopper Kelsie Moore.

The Reds continued to look impressive in stoppage time, with chances inside the box from Millard and Jex-Oldfield narrowly failing to find the target, meaning that they went into half time looking excellent value for their lead.

HALF TIME: Barnsley FC Women FC 2-0 Norton & Stockton Ancients LFC

After a relatively cagey opening fifteen minutes of the half, Barnsley FC Women sprung into action in the 60th minute, with a Melissa Turton-Burrell free kick being whipped into the area from 35 yards out, leading to the forward Woodhouse heading narrowly wide of the mark.

The Reds looked set to triple their advantage, with a number of impressive runs into the final third, and in the 66th minute, substitute Jodie Gregory capitalised on an excellent delivery from Biggins to slot home at the back post, scoring Barnsley’s third goal of the afternoon.

Woodhouse came close to sealing her brace in the 70th minute with a looping shot from thirty yards out, however the forward’s speculative shot could only hit the upright before it was cleared by an opposition defender.

With ten minutes remaining, Millard capped off what had been an excellent outing for the wing-back with an equally superb solo effort, working her way into a one-on-one position before dispatching a shot with aplomb past Moore, to make it four for Barnsley.

Two minutes later, the visitors were able to score what proved to be a consolation goal, producing a counter-attack which was able to beat Flaherty from close-range.

Jess Horsley’s Reds side was not to be denied, however, and in the closing minutes, they continued to provide attacking threat, coming close to a fifth goal in the 87th minute, when captain Charley Evans hit an effort from distance which was directed just over the bar.

The rest of the game passed largely without incident, allowing the Reds to pick up their second FA Women’s National League win of the season.

Our young team should be beating a team that's ancient.

I watched it. Standard was better than I expected, few decisions opposition weren't happy with went our way and they kinda fell apart. Wasn't a 4-1 game by any stretch but we looked plenty fitter going into last 20 mins. My little lass loved it & would definitely recommend getting down for one in the future.
