Currently on with Barnet Affair by Dan Whiting and finding it amusing. I do enjoy reading about other clubs. Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions?
Football Daft by Michael Parkinson. You'd have to buy a second hand copy nowadays, but I've just had a quick look and there are some available on Amazon. My favourite footie book when I was a kid.
If you like autobiographies then, Barnsley related, Neil Redfearn’s is excellent, he loves this club. And John Dennis’ is better still (he lived and breathed this club) and puts perspective on his supposed failings during his tenure. Just got back off holiday where I read (these were Amazon second hand bargains at about £2.50 each) ‘The Crazy Gang’ by Dave Basset and Wally Downes and was not bad, Keenan’s which was very good. Then picked one up off used shelf in hotel which was Peter Schmeichel’s newest one called ‘One’ which is a brilliant read, genuinely. I never knew that he was half Polish, born in Poland and his Dad had to agree to become a spy in order to be able to move to Denmark with his wife and kids. Highly recommend.
Pretty much read all those you listed except Schmeichel's. I'll look it up later today and thanks for that. John Dennis' book i found very interesting and revealing. Proper enjoyed it, especially having sat down with him one day to discuss a few matters.
A couple I'd recommend are The Boy On The Shed by Paul Ferris and Back From The Brink by Paul McGrath. Both Paul Merson books are a good read too.
Thanks bud. Much appreciated.. I'll look them up. I've been considering a Paul Merson book as it goes
I like those with a tale to tell, who’ve lived a bit. Don’t go near the memoirs of modern day serial Prem winners and the like, can’t think of owt more boring!
I can’t agree on Lars Leese’s. Interesting story but poorly written how it keeps inexplicably switching from first person to third person. Still interesting though how it explained how his agent was Tony Woodcock who basically conned us into signing some experienced German keeper who had never actually played a single professional match. Then, after us, was supposed to sign for Hibs who pulled out last minute and that was him finished.
Good reads Gazza's book John Dennis. Boring for us old uns as its life as we knew it in the owd days. Nowt interesting. Jimmy Greaves Tommy Docherty. Just bought off ebay. So tha'd best be reyt, Read Parkys bio on his playing alongside Dickie bird and Boycott. Obviously cricket . Very good read. As are both of theirs.
Enjoyed the Napper McCann books as a kid. Bought them for my lad but he’s not interested so I have to read them myself.
