Yes I remember going in the chippy and asking for a bag of scraps. Sometimes I even had chips with them.
Chemist to IT, was that a switch made by many Chemists cos the bloke that produced our first ever CAD package in the late 70,s/ early 80's was a former chemist.?
If anyone would know about it, it's you! I guess that for the same reason (ie excise duty) commercial acetic acid is made some way other than brewing alcohol and is then distilled to purify it. I now need to find out what the industrial process is and what impurities are likely to be in it. I vividly recall using glacial acetic acid (highly concentrated) in the chemistry lab, awful stuff, made me heave.
My journey was via redundancy and having a mate who was an IT contractor on £150 a week in 1982.... I was lucky to get on a TOPS course (Training OPportunities Scheme) at Derby Tech before Thatcher scrapped it. It was a 12 month course with a 3 month industrial placement and an HNC qualification at the end of it. Life-changing for me.
I had a fish and chip watch, but every time I listened to it tick, I ended up with an ear full of batter.
The good old redundo although not though of like that at the time. I was redundant after being a design draughtsman for 20 yrs so went to Hollybank Huddersfield to do a Cert Ed so I could teach in Further Ed. Maggie struck there as well and the change became limited in scope. Still ended up in aspects of education though if not direct teaching. Been redundant twice and both after 20+ yrs service. However, lets say I was a lot wiser 2nd time round and was more able to manage the situation.
