This is a proper “and at this point im afraid to ask” but what is the anti catholic/ ira song? I see it referenced here all the time and I hear the announcement on the tannoy at games but for some reason I can’t figure out which chant it is. I asked around me at games before and get shrugs. Sometimes worry about humming along enthusiastically to a song I can’t make out the words of and it turning out to be that one!
It's something like... When I was young and had no sense I bought a flute for 50 pence The only song that I could play Was to f*** the Pope and the IRA We all hate Leeds scum etc I mean, I'm sure there would be a way to jig the words to make it "f*** the/Sheffield Wednesday" and it instantly takes on a mood that stops the club potentially being fined for the religious nature of the chant

I hate the fact that our Club should be fined for morons voicing their opinions. All clubs have them, even if it's one. I love my club & the haters will not diminish that. UUUUUUUU RRRRRREDDDDDZ
Change "Pope" to Blades and "the IRA" to Sheff Wednesday. 3 rivals abused in one song without offending the FA.
I must have selective deafness. I've been attending Oakwell since the 70s and I've never heard it. Or more accurately, I've never known what was being sung, so I've probably just ignored it. But what a crap song to sing in support of your team. The words have absolutely nothing to do with football and I can't see how singing them would give your team a lift, which is the main point of chanting, isn't it? Anybody who sings rubbish like that and thinks that they're spurring the team on to victory must be brain dead.
Surfaced about 1988 on the England scene and then a section of most club's fans took it on. Seemed to be around the time Eire had the Indian sign over us, but I daresay its origins are from Ibrox
I don't understand how people can't have heard it. I sit in the East Stand and hear it from the Ponte at some point during most games.
And I regularly hear it from the West Stand and at away games dont quite understand why Barnsley fans want to f**k the Pope Fully on board with the hating leeds bit Still think the Ripper song is much worse mind
Wow I wasn’t sure what to think when i saw that but now I hear it all the time at games! I’ve heartily joined in on the we all hate Leeds scum bit many a time but had never been able to make out the bit that comes before and thought it was just something Leeds related. Looks like I’m not the only one reading this thread. Interesting thanks!
I think a lot of people have heard the abusive part but the beginning is so quiet nobody can hear it. Mainly because the idiots tend to only join in with the abusive part. I wonder why
Ok now I’m really confused, what you’re saying here is that “we all hate Leeds scum” is the abusive (loud) part and the quiet part at the beginning isn’t, I thought the beginning part that not many people know/ join in with us the abusive part??? Ps for the record I don’t consider we all hate Leeds scum as abusive and more a statement of fact
