Supermarkets have had a huge impact on pubs, strangely it doesn't seem to get mentioned as often as it should. If they sell beer that tastes of something, supplement it with food that's more than edible, they'll have a chance of doing well.
Going for a couple of Heinekens in Wetherspoon later. £4.38 for a 660 bottle which I don't thinks too bad. Then home to watch football.
€1.30 (£1.08) for Moretti 660ml in my local supermarket in Italy, which is nice . Heineken is about €1.58 (£1.31) for the same size you drink in Spoons
There are a few factors at play, but supermarkets are probably the biggest single factor, when we were in the trade Tesco were retailing ie Foster's at half the price per pint that we could buy it in bulk from Heineken.
That's brilliant. Do you still have a smog problem in Italy? (Did a bit on it in Geography at School).
Not where we are, although I dare say Rome and Milan will suffer from smog due to traffic levels, which are horrendous both in the centres and the surrounds. View down our land and no smog, just mist in the valleys
Fewer people are drinking nowadays. I don't think I've had a pint in a pub in nigh on 5 years. The nearest is about 1 mile, but I usually end up driving so its soft drinks. But if pubs want to stay open they have to offer more than just pints and barmaids with a bit of cleavage like they did in the 90s. Coffee shops are springing up everywhere, and are usually busy. Pubs could tap into the same market and offer hot/cold drinks and decent priced food during the day.
Yeah I get the supermarket bit but that's been around since 90s supermarkets doing cheaper ale people drinking at home to save money nothing new. Plus I don't drink as much as I used to odd couple match days I try to get to my locals every week or so for odd couple I don't drink in week but am not a fan of canned larger or drinking in the house.
I'm confused are you in England or Italy at the moment. One minute your having a pint in southern England next your posting pictures from Italy.

Said it before but the govt should hike the tax on shop bought alcohol and reduce it in hospitality venues. Not a complete panacea but it would push some into changing habits about where they buy their beer. Also raise money for Rachel Reeves' black hole if done correctly!
There’s obviously several factors as mentioned but a major factor is Sky or on a lesser scale TV channels who charge. Many families pay out over a hundred pounds a month for them so they prefer to stay and watch at home to get moneys worth. Also, there a less and less pubs broadcasting Sky Sports as they’re unwilling to pay the ridiculous extortionate commercial fees
