Indian restaurant

There's a decent one in Rotherham but forgot what it was called. Up opposite post office. Used to be a pub or nightclub before it was an Indian.

Changed names but best one I've had was Raj Poot Wakefield.

Picked up my sizzling tray with my fingers and they were straight out with a bowl of Ice Cubes.

 

This one is best on trip advisor. It’s take your own alcohol, and the food amazing…

 

If you prefer genuine south Indian food try Mavelli in Sheffield. The dosa there is spot on

 

I second that. Often get takeaway from there and it's bloody glorious. Definitely worth going if you find yourself in Sheffield.

It's now called the Bombay Palace, on Smyth Street, and it's still the best. Liverpool and Man. U. fans though, but still lovely people serving great food in generous portions.

There's a decent Indian in Bramley (Rotherham). Its an all you can eat one. Again the name escapes me but it's across the Tinsley viaduct near the road junction.

Nice one will give it a try. Have you tried Ashoka on eccleshall road? Rajput in Walkley also used to be pretty good, as was Kebabish on Wicker.

 

We have a tonne of 'Indian' restaurants and takeaways around us and we've tried all of them over the years. The best one by far changed hands about a decade ago and it was a big dive in flavour and quality. We do get a takeaway once a blue moon from one place but its pretty average, but its still the best locally.

The best place I've been though was in Sheffield, a place called Cafe Guru just off West Street. Doubt its there anymore as we're talking over 20 years ago now. Seven spices was pretty decent too, but again, we're talking the same timespan.

And of course, what we class as your traditional "Indian" tends to actually be Bangladeshi.

 

Cafe Guru used to be one of my favourites too. Really good, used to go every few weeks . It was a little different to the normal fayre.

Me and my wife sat in there one evening around 2006/7 , right next to a table of 4 spotty 18 year old lads, called Alex, Jamie, Matt and the other one, aka the Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner doesn't like chicken, well he didn't, but his palate may now have changed given he has transformed into a North American sophisticate.

 

Chicken Tikka starter, Fish Turka for main with delicious crispy light naan cut into quarters... *sigh*. Oh for the noughties. Arctic... Who? ;-)

 

The restaurant in Rotherham I was referring to is actually Sri Lankan. I went to a Bangladeshi one in York too. I felt a bit ignorant on both occasions asking for a mixed starter, Lamb Nagga Takhari (excuse the spelling) and garlic naan. Just wish I'd taken the actual names down of the dishes. You don't do it though because I only really visit York once in a blue moon for the occasional race meeting.

 

I do enjoy Sri Lankan, South Indian and Goan cuisines in particular but they are far less common. More aromatic, more use of coconut milk and even vinegar used in sauce bases. Very tasty. And dosa's were a revelation the first time I had them.

 

Paneer Kebab for starters then lamb curry......delightful..... then out in sheff for a proper "neet art" (!)

They opened one in Leeds actually, sadly didn't last long. Owner was a really nice guy too.

 

IMHO there isn't a really good Indian Restaurant in Barnsley. There are some dishes at Tandoori Hut that are good, but there are others that aren't. As for some of the others...

I've tried all those in Barnsley listed in this thread and some are really bad.

I find the best way to choose is to go on Google Maps and look at the customer photos that have been uploaded. Those bowls of luminous slop with a couple of bits of chicken floating around in them, that really is what you're served at some of these places.

 

Fully agree with that last assessment. We're currently looking at moving house next year and a bit tragic, but one of the initial bits of research for areas we think might be a go is to look at images posted by customers to assess takeaways that might be decent!
