I always get undertaken on the a1 because I have the gall to leave a two car gap between me & the car in front, it’s like they think it’s an invitation.

on a 4 lane motorway, the middle lane hoogers occupy lane 3 for some reason.

Observed by unmarked cop car it would be road traffic offence if they want to.

Basically we don't need Smart Motorways, We Need Smart Drivers....what's the point of 4 lanes when Lanes 1 and often 2 are free of traffic whilst Lanes 3 and 4 are busy? ....

It's horrendous pal something that never leaves you, I actually saw my pal 2 hours before he got killed, there was no mobile phones back then I went to college on church street the next day and picked up the Barnsley Star in the paper shop what was opposite, his picture was in, it broke me.

That's perfectly fine. Undertaking is when you change lanes to the left to pass someone. The situation you describe is just your lane moving faster than the other lane.

I would only do it when there is a hard shoulder as an escape lane if the **** decided to pull in as I am passing. Remember they are hogging the middle lane because they are a **** driver, so need to be careful of what stupid stunt they might pull.

    100 % spot on.
Road traffic law , to pass on the left to gain an advantage is an offence.
Traffic in lane 2 slower than lane 1 ,acceptable as your not doing this to gain an advantage.

I drive to Manchester most weeks, and the standard driving on display is remarkable. It's like Cannonball Rally. It's start at the Flouch roundabout, then you hit the Mottram and Hyde nightmare, then the A57 into Manchester with insane lane weaving. Then just as you've got through all that, you hit the modern-day madness that is Just Eat drivers, on battery-powered bikes.

The flip side to this though, is it doesn't half hone your driving skills.

I was travelling back from work quite late on a sparsely populated M1 recently and there was a guy in lane 2 of 3, travelling at 50mph. I got past him and then watched in my rear view mirror as the motorway effectively blocked up behind him - the lorries couldn't get past because they didn't want to undertake and were not allowed in lane 3 to overtake.

I genuinely think some people believe that lane 1 is only for lorries. It could really do with some public info films about motorway driving standards, backed up with much more issuing of fixed penalties for clear examples of awful driving.

But the above is really an inconvenience - far worse is the people who tailgate at 70-80mph. That's lethal. It grates with me that you see the aftermath of a collision and its called an "accident". Driving on a motorway should be the safest driving, it's just a straight line. Observe some basic safety rules and little can go wrong. Most "accidents" are not actually accidents, they are caused by someone's bad and often lethal driving.

Terrible mate. I found out via a work colleague saying someone in my area had been killed in a car crash the day before. It was the Easter holiday period. He’d heard it on Radio Sheffield that morning and when he said the name and asked if it was anyone I knew I just froze. Hoped to hell he’d got it wrong and like you had it confirmed by the Star that evening. Absolutely tragic….

Surely they must straddle lanes 2 and 3?
