[BFC SITE] Report: Reds defeat Grecians

Barnsley came from behind to secure all three points in Devon against Exeter City in Sky Bet League One.

The Reds had an early scare when our hosts found space on the edge of the area, culminating with a close drive by former Barnsley man Jack Aitchison within twenty yards.

A couple of half-chances fell to Stephen Humphrys, the first an effort from inside the area on his right-foot cutting in from the left, but the attacker saw his effort blocked. Shortly after, Keillor-Dunn was found over the top and advanced down the right, crossing for Humphrys who almost connected with the delivery as he swept across the front post inside the six-yard-box.

It was the Grecians however who found the early breakthrough through Magennis' free-kick. Given just outside the area in a central position, the Northern Ireland international struck a low effort which ricocheted off of the Barnsley wall and deflected past Ben Killip in the 13th minute.

The Reds enjoyed significant spells of possession but we're unable to penetrate the resolute Exeter defence. Keillor-Dunn almost got the Reds back level ten minutes before the break as he was found by a perfectly weighted through ball by Russell in a central position, but he was smothered well by Whitworth as he made the save.

Darrell Clarke's men entered the second half with renewed vigour and quickly got themselves back level. A bouncing ball broke to Nwakali on the edge of the area in a central position and the Nigerian demonstrated exquisite technique to arrow in on the half-volley and get the Reds back level in the game.

The momentum of the game quickly swung in our favour, with the advantage soon after being in the Reds' favour just shy of ten minutes after the leveller. Humphrys was played in on the right-hand side, took the ball to the byline and crossed at the back stick for the awaiting Keillor-Dunn who applied the finishing touch in front of the jubilant travelling Barnsley supporters.

Exeter looked to fight back and mount a response with the introduction of a flurry of substitutions with attacking impetus, but the Reds defence held strong to confirm victory at St James Park against the Grecians.
