What's with Barnsley fans getting all giddy over other clubs? Do people actually support other clubs, it's nonsense, I mean I've watched Frickley a few times when we haven't had a game
You don't have to 'get it'. Just stay off the thread. It's a bit like turning the TV to another channel if yr not happy. I've supported Barnsley for 54 years and Celtic for 50. I've never felt I needed 'permission'.
No I couldn't get a ticket. It's not like getting into Oakwell you know. I watched in at Catterick Garrison along with about 300 others.
Don't worry about it Nip - it doesn't affect your life. I think it comes from Barnsley having so many immigrants over such a long period of time.Something to be proud of really. It led to a heady mix of Socialism for much of our history - sadly disappearing now.
Barnsley is probably the least Scottish place I know, there was 1 kid out of nearly 1000 kids in our school who was from Kilmarnock that was it
You're giving your age away there Young Man! Huge numbers of Scots came to work in the mines throughout the 20 century. Though the Celtic support will also have a lot to do with the large Irish immigration from the late 19 century onwards and their success as a football club 'on the Park' from the mid 60s. Loads of different reasons really.
Went to school in the 70s and 80s and we had just the 1 lad from killie, I'm from a mining family too stretching back 150 years most my dad's mates were from Grimey, Cudworth etc as broad as they come, loads with roots back to the Midlands in mid 1800's
Never understood why it bothers people so much when people have second (or more) clubs. Nowt wrong with following another club's results. I always look out for Newcastle because my grandma was a Geordie, born and bred in Byker, married a Barnsley man she met while serving in WWII and spent the rest of her life in Grimethorpe.
Supporting a team for me and only my opinion is actively being a part of the fabric of said club, making a financial contribution in the form of ticket sales, merch, and whatever other avenues are possible. People may keep an eye out on other clubs results through family members etc I totally get that, but I'd say it's more through past ties and a soft spot rather than being an actual supporter attending games, more of casting an eye over results
By that metric, surely you're a supporter of Frickley? I don't know, I just can't see why there's an issue with people supporting more than one club, especially if those clubs are in different leagues/countries and unlikely to ever play each other. If someone was suggesting they supported Barnsley and Rotherham or one of the Sheffield clubs I'd agree that's pretty weird. But Barnsley and Celtic. Or Dundee United. Or Borussia Dortmund. Or Barcelona. No issue for me. Sure it might be a bit glory hunting or lifting trophies vicariously but I don't see any problem with it (personally, of course).
If going to games isn't possible then just don't get the point tbh painful enough when I see our next generation and future lifeblood walking round in city and Chelsea shirts. Each to there own I guess
I must say my fascination of supporting Barnsley is most definitely a case of glory hunting. Two visits to Wembley and two wins. Glory hunting is the way ahead. But seriously I’ve met some wonderful people in my time supporting the reds.
