How bad is it these days? And by this I mean at the highest level - not our match commentators. Just a list of names by the commentator with a shout of the name as the commentator expects the score to come. “ Gakpo, Alexander Arnold, Nunez, and it’s S A L A H!!! “ No description of play whatsoever. Just shout when they think someone might score. I turn it down but if you were visually impaired you’d have no clue what was doing on.
Yep totally agree. Its only there so they can get viral clips out of commentators going mad. I.e 'Torressssss' from Neville, the Aguero last minute league winner etc.
Gotta agree some of it is just cringe Used to listen on radio sometimes just preffered how much more descriptive they had to be. Alan Green one of the best from 5 live until they binned him.
"Marcelle goes for glory... and gets it!" Is a million times better than Martin Tyler screeching "Aguero".
….and don’t get me started on the co-commentators. Andy Townsend and Shearer adding absolutely nothing to tonight’s Amazon coverage.
I actually think the Aguero commentary by Martin Tyler was a classic, as was the Wolsenholme 66’ World Cup “they think its all over”, also Coleman’s “1 nil”, I think commentators generally grow on you in time. As for just mentioning player’s names ha, isn’t that what their job is ha. These days they have a so called expert summariser sat at their side to explain how games are going.
2002 Beckham v Greece was the worst. "And it's Beckham" ... ... ... ... *20 years lateyeeehrr* "I DON'T BELIEVE IT. GIVE THAT MAN A KNIGHTHOOD".
More broadly speaking, is there anyone worth listening to talking about football? Is the bull$hit we hear from the pundits anymore valid than our own opinions?
The Aguerooooo one IMO is awful, from an awful commentator. Tyler was the beginning of the demise to the terrible standards we have now. All about the soundbite rather than providing a good commentary of the game.
Yes I actually like the aguero one mate. It definitely deserves its status, I was just using it as an example of viral moments in commentary, stuff like that
I used to think he was crap in his earlier years too mate but I think he finished up or8. Come on then what’s your ideal commentary and any examples?
If their “analysis”, (if that’s what they call it when they use circles and draw arrows), is so incisive, why haven’t any of them ever been successful coaches?
I got into an argument about commentators saying “Barnsley are playing from left to right”. It’s meaningless unless you know the stadium. The commentator tried to justify it saying it helped visually impaired people. As someone who has worked with Visually impaired people - it really doesn’t. More context/ description is needed. Name of end, Towards home/ away fans etc is at least a point of reference. Kicking left to right is just a lazy, meaningless term.
I can't stand listening to John Helm's commentaries anymore though, and I either mute it or pick a different video.
The old skool were the best, Coleman, Davies, Moore etc. They were descriptive of what was happening, and just as importantly they didn't just fill gaps with inane chatter, they just shut up.
Amazon coverage at least offers the option to turn comms off. That’s how I like to watch football. I wish they’d introduce such an option for boxing, darts and other sports I like. Let me watch in peace. You’re right though, the shouting of players’ names is too much. Occasionally fair enough. In the right moment (Aguero was one). But with that drip on Sky these days, Drury, it’s every time there’s a shot. In between his horrific, pre-planned poetry and what not. He’s an absolute bell. I was blessed I suppose, growing up listening to such as Moore, Motson and Davies.
