3 good commentators there definitely, totally agree pal. Imo Martin Tyler up there with Davies Moore and Motson, but my all time favourite was the already mentioned David Coleman, the best and not just with football as he did a fair few other sports commentary.
Best one currently is Daniel Mann, although the last time I actually watched a game not involving Barnsley was genuinely probably a year ago.
Spot on. Commentary should give an insight into what is not obvious. Sadly it’s become something a bit egotistical. .
I have to watch England games on ITV on mute. Sam Matterface is so diabolically sh.ite, fingernails down a blackboard bad, that I’d throw something at the tv if I listened to him.
John Motson's screeching is hard to listen to now, when watching old Fa cup or Prem highlights. And again he's one who I mute if one of his commentaries comes up. I've always preferred the Bbc to Itv, and I think Barry Davies was good because just like David Coleman, he did various sports.
Maybe I’m a glass half full kind of guy but not many annoy me. I’m not a fan of Matterface but I can’t think of many other lead commentators that irritate me. I like Shearer as a co-commentator but not as keen on him in the studio. The opposite is true with Carragher & Neville. I like them in the studio but don’t feel like they’re suited to co-commentary. Less is sometimes more with co-commentary. That’s why I prefer McCoist & Shearer who will come in with one liners here & there rather than Carragher & Neville trying to analyse the whole match during the game. Without going full Joey Barton I think there’s a few women pundits on Sky who don’t offer a lot. Izzy Christensen is one that stands out. I’m a bit bored of Micah Richards too. There’s only so many times you can hear someone over exaggerate their laugh until it grates on you. It’s not like he offers anything insightful either. I love the Amazon coverage though. I’d be a happy man if they got all the football rights, the apps easy to use & I love how you get so many different presenters & pundits rather than the usual ones contracted to Sky & TNT. Jim Rosenthal is brilliant. I remember him fondly for F1 & boxing when I was a kid. Good to have Clive Tyledsley back too.
Where is Tyldesley now then, because I thought Itv were harsh in getting rid of him, this summer. I think it was an insult to Clive that his last game, was a Euro's group game, and not even the Final or a Semi.
I don’t think he has any regular work which is a shame. Whenever I hear him it always takes me back to the commentary of the big champions league nights on ITV in the 90’s & 00’s. Before we had Sky that & the FA cup games were the only live footy I got to see on the TV.
Him, Karen Carney, Keown & Jenas. Can't do with any of them, I'm also definitely missing loads. But 100% Matterface is the worst for me. Awful. Don't know him obviously, but watching him with interviews and non-football stuff, seems a bit of a nob too. Really obnoxious and egotistical
I can’t stand the bloke who does the championship commentary on sky. Not sure of his name but at the end of pretty much any game that ends with a winning team (usually the home team) he tries to paint a picture of the town or city being in a state of euphoria about the win. Me and my lad try to guess what he is going to say before it finishes eg. Sheffield United maybe beat Plymouth on a wet Tuesday evening 1-0 would be “Well tonight it’s happy Sheffield Tuesday and the steel city is alive” or **** like “Burnley have sealed a gargantuan result over Blackburn in this battle of Lancashire!! The trip home for these fans will be all the better knowing that they have the spoils of victory in their palms”. F&&k me it’s not River Plate vs Boca
Loved both John Motson and Barry Davies. Barry more cerebral but it was hard to beat Motty's schoolboy enthusiasm mixed with obscure factoids. An honourable mention for Tony Gubba as well - a massively underrated commentator in my opinion.
