Remember years ago barnsley lad Geoff horsefield going from Halifax to Fulham where he scored loads and helped them climb the leagues from league one. Just as bad we missed out on him, we had just been relegated from the premier league at the time.
Were just going to post same mate, probably best striker we got from non-league was Mick Butler from Worsbrough Bridge.
Our ratio of bringing strikers through the academy is also poor. There were big calls beginning of the season and most of last from many on here *not me* for us to sign a non league striker, James Norwood.
Dont know why people throw such hissy fits when we are linked with non league players, especially lower down than the 5th tier. Cost next to nothing , no risk involved, might unearth a gem. Dont understand why they can't grasp we can be looking at non league players whilst always looking for players in professional leagues..?
You're right about academy strikers, poor record indeed. Norwood though, he would have been signed from non league, but a bit different to buying a young lad with no league experience, Norwood has loads, proven.
Well we whistled Mick Butler from down the pit, don’t get the negativity here, he’s hardly going to cost us a fortune and why not. Thing is it either works or it doesn’t. But you can bet if we don’t go for him and he was a success elsewhere ther would be loads weighing on that we hadn’t.
Prime time Cauley was memorable but I don’t think he’s value for money these days. I hope we can sign someone with more pace and hunger.
It was abit of a tounge in cheek joke. Although if Norwood had never played for us no one would want us to sign him from non league.
Thing is if we sign him were signing rubbish if Derby sign him the club get slated for not buying him.
If he does go Wrexham, I reckon he'll be right up for it mate. Not worked out for him last couple of years, last big push, and if he can get his name & face out there on documentaries etc, even better. I do wish him well, great player for us when he first arrived.
It didn't work out for us and Shaun Tuton did it, and what level were Halifax in, at that time ?. And somebody who I thought showed some good pre season form, was Stefan Payne. But Im not sure if he also didn't get a fair chance.
