Anyone any tips on where to stop in Rome?

Off for the weekend in a few weeks, never been to Italy so looking forward to it……has anyone been to Rome? If so where did you stop? Nightlife? Meals?

Trastavere is a nice area - good night life, cheap, dancing in the street at night, nice restaurants. Beautiful place.

Basically anywhere you go will be incredible food. Just stay away from anywhere that has a waiter/pest stood outside trying to entice you in - 90% of those are tourist traps.

Honestly, don't sleep on Trapizzino. A little sandwich shop - they do these little sourdough bread sandwiches filled with the most amazing chicken, pork, mushroom stews etc. 5 euro for a banging sandwich and fills you up.

Rome is wonderful, enjoy every moment.

 

I’ve looked at that Trastavere, is it walking distance to the tourist areas?

Been twice second time was a campsite outside the city, can’t recall the other one but was an hotel and was central.
Great city still much to see, can’t recommend nightlife as I just remember odd street cafe bars agree there and everywhere but did go in an Irish bar.

 

But not what they do when they are over here.

 

We stayed here. Perfect location in the middle of all the tourist stuff. It was 5 mins walk to both the Spanish steps and the Trev Fountain. As other posters have said there’s good restaurants everywhere you look.

I advise you to stop at traffic lights!

 

Stop at the Tiber otherwise you might get wet.

 

I’d recommend the crypt of the capuchin monks it has displays of skulls of the dead monks it’s a bit macabre but well worth a visit

 

It's a little out of the way as it's across the river, but Trastevere is 2.6km from the colosseum. Google says it's a 35min walk but I did it in about 20. And the thing is, every street in Rome is worth seeing.

Trastevere itself is a nice neighbourhood where you could easily spend a few days exploring and eating yourself into a coma.

I will say that even as a relatively young and fit person, I was nackered after 2 days of walking - 40k steps each day but so so worth it.

Also highly recommend trevi fountain at night. Even though it's busy and even though I've seen it in a million pictures it's still absolutely breathtaking.

It was extremely central, decent sized rooms (most hotels in the city centre have very tiny rooms!) and a postage sized stamp pool on the roof (barely any hotels have a pool) if that’s your thing. We booked through Expedia (and Quidco) and they upgraded us to a nicer room for free as we were at a certain level on Expedia. The room came with a smartphone to use whilst there that was preloaded with restaurants and things in the area and had the fanciest, craziest shower I’ve ever seen, it even had a TV mounted in it! The breakfast buffet in the rooftop area was fabulous too.

We had a heatwave whilst we were there with over 40 degrees every day so we spent quite a bit of time sheltering in the hotel during the day and ventured out at mornings and evenings. We did a tour to Pompeii that was amazing. We tried going to the Colosseum in the morning, queued up for 2 hours and nearly died in the heat. We left and went back an hour before closing and you could just walk straight in, no queues at all so that’s worth knowing. It was a lovely holiday and I’d definitely go back.

 

It's walkable, it's a huge city, but on your first visit you'll be in the centre. The churches in Rome are insane. My personal recommendation would be Gesu, the frescoes on the ceiling are insane.

Eat lunch at holes in the wall, the locals tend to eat far later than brits, so on weekdays if you're eating at 7-8 you should be fine, but better places book. Avoid anything near a major sight and you'll be fine. And if you can find a proper roman carbonara, you'll be very happy indeed.

Hunt down good gelato, there will be guides online, I think we literally had two a day when we first visited! And just look up everywhere, Italy protect their historical centres really well generally so just enjoy it.

There's so much to do and see you can't possibly pack it all in. Oh, and the trevi fountain. Go at night, as late as you can. It will still be busy, but its manageable and when its lit up, its truly magical. And my final suggestion thats not always mentioned, Trajan's column. The detail on it is mind blowing... But so is Rome. You'll have a great time.

Another vote for Trastevere. It's where the Italians go out in Rome, is what I was always told.
