Ironically I was at the final in the Spurs end with my mate John who was a lifelong Liverpool fan. A woman I worked with was a Cambridge United shareholder and got us the tickets.

The atmosphere was awful after Ronnie Whealan equalised a couple of minutes from time and when we got out of the ground it was absolute mayhem.

I didn’t go. I’d just left school and wasn’t earning, but from what I’ve heard, I think I’d have been scared to death as a 16year old. Game aside, it sounded really dodgy, like a free for all.

100% spot on , the best side I watched in my lifetime ,great night but was scary too at times, got attacked by loads of kids with face masks only kids ,first and only time at a football game fought back ,we gave as good as we got but a frightening and memorable night .
Loads of busses with missing windows.
Outsung the kop throughout the game.

We must have been really lucky I have no memory of getting off the bus into the ground or coming out after. I recall the fog on the way over the tops but we must have kept on moving because when we got in the ground I thought where is everyone. It wasn't until the following morning when i saw the papers that i was aware of what had gone on. I remember getting back late all the safe and well all windows in tact ,my late dad saying if want the day off school you can. Not a cat in hells chance was I having the day off I wasn't missing one of the rare occasions as a Barnsley fan I could give it to every fan of any other club staff or pupil.

i think 3 of us went to that game. Me, you and JW from Darfield. We went to a lot of games in the early 80s. Good times. You got me into ‘Taste’ though I’ll always maintain Level 42 are a pile of *****!

We went on one of the buses laid on by Yorkshire Tracky and probably set off around 4 o’clock. The thick fog over the tops was unbelievable and people did wonder if the game would get played. No mobile phones or internet then to know what was happening in Liverpool. We got dropped off around half a mile from the ground and ran the gauntlet of a load of local scallies wanting a pop at us. At 17 I’d never experienced anything like it, completely new experience and definitely intimidating. We got in the ground about 5 minutes before half time. The numbers of Reds fans there had to be seen to be believed, we seemed to have half the ground. We were definitely the best side that night too and could easily have won. Unforgettable night.

Blimey. This brings back loads of memories.
I'm crap with names but remember Jeremy cos we used to play snooker every Saturday morning in the basement at Barnsley town hall.
Just a stab at it, you're not called Dave are you? Remind me.
But I do recall very clearly the journey to Liverpool through the fog and ice, and you getting chased back to the car after the game.
    Happy days.

Went on the special, so no probs getting there. Long walk under police escort from what I assumed was Lime St. Scallies chucking bricks from the flats en route and stragglers getting picked off by gangs at every junction/alley we passed. Got inside in plenty of time and bumped into the Agbrigg lads. What a sensational night.

Correct in every respect Mr S. Particularly the speed with which you drove away form those Liverpool scallys!

Just reading the match report again how Barnsley kept Liverpool at bay,I'd have re worded that and put how Liverpool kept Barnsley at bay.

40 odd chuffin years ago !!!!!
I picked you and Jez outside the town hall and then the excitement began.
    Where do you live now?
I've moved on from Level 42 now, you'd be stuck with jazz in the car now.

Frightening isn't it. I'm not completely gaga yet but enjoy an occasional dribble and involuntary wee when excited. I'm otherwise well and still supporting those reds.
Which bit of the Dales are you in?

10yrs old Went on the train with my dad due to the fog. Convinced the ball crossed the line for a goal and Grobbelaar pulled it back.

Out-sung the Anfield kop if I recall
