They were, and I agree mostly. But there were also quite a few who had no intention of paying them back. There were also some who thought they would get away with paying on the never never as a minimum. This is why HMRC put the rules in place to help recoup the money from companies closing.

Spanish flu - H1N1 - killed an estimated 100 *million* worldwide in a time without significant international travel. At a time with 1.8billion total human population, that was 5-6% of the global population dying in 2-3 years. Roughly the same as World War 1 *and* World War 2 *combined*.

The chances of an outbreak of that particular flu is slim, but is certainly non-zero and I can guarantee that we would be locking down quicker than you can say "I'm not" if we were faced with an uncontrolled outbreak and didn't have a suitable vaccine or treatments.

 

One of the "perks" of been a ltd company is if the company goes under for whatever reason the debts and gone with the company. I imagine it would be very hard to prove the allegations you talk about.

 

Yes the Spanish flu was a worldwide pandemic with consequences many times worse than COVID, but it happened at the end of The Great War when many nations' health infrastructures were still recovering from the war and medical science wasn't any where near as sophisticated as it is today. It's probably fair to say that many flu variants in the last 100 years could have been equally devastating but for medical progress. As I said in a previous post on this thread, the medical establishment was well aware of the potential severity of the current flu strain and we should have been vaccinating not just the elderly and infirm but the whole population. I suspect that didn't happen here because of the rundown state of the NHS.

 

What you say about the Spanish flu is correct but you expect the NHS to vaccinate the whole population healthy or vulnerable a near on 70 million people I wouldn't like to put a cost on what it would cost the NHS. It's about 10 quid to get a flu vaccine if you feel you need one but your not vulnerable I'd get yourself one.

 

I thought people would continue to wear masks when unwell post covid as they do in many Asian countries. We know it stops the spread of disease and protects loved ones, colleagues, friends, passers by etc, so why does no one do it?

 

Too much 'trouble' for some,some wouldn't wear them during covid and most don't give a monkeys about anyone but themselves!

 

Fair point but I think they should have at least pushed the starting age down from 65 to 55 and had a better go at publicising it. Another aspect is how widespread the anti-vax movement is, one of my sister-in-laws and her husband who are in their early 60s haven't had it and neither ever had a COVID jab. Needless to say, both were very ill a couple of times at the height of COVID and a couple of weeks ago with the flu.

As I'm an old git, I had my jab at the beginning of December.

 

It would have cost less than £700m to vaccinate everybody for flu - probably nearer half that. But you have to compare that to the cost of non-vaccinating. How many work days have been lost due to people catching flu and taking time off - I caught it last year and despite being usually fit and healthy was off sick for 2 days but I wouldn't have been fit to go to the office for nearly a fortnight. I also lost the best part of a stone and over 6 months later my resting heart rate is still elevated.

 

Have you paid for a flu vaccine this year? I've had flu in previous years I also had covid and flu was far worse for me. I'm healthy look after myself don't smoke rarely drink not obese, I wouldn't get another covid jab if you paid me but flu I think in my 50s I will start to get a yearly jab.
