My older brother played for Barnsley boys in the same team as David Wright and Billy Houghton. My Brother was right half. His job was to mark Huddersfield boys inside left one Dennis Law. The word ‘Legend’ is bandied around for those who were only good. Never was that epithet so deserved than on Dennis Law. One of the very very best. RIP Dennis.
David Wright was a pupil of St. Mary's Boys Junior School and then Holgate Grammar School, wasn't he? He played for England Boys and, I believe, captained England Amateurs. Talented footballer though he was, he went down the academic route via Cambridge University.
Met him briefly outside Old Trafford when we played them in the cup in 98. He was promoting his new book alongside another United legend, possibly Jimmy Greenhoff. Law was one of my dad's idols as a kid, so he was absolutely thrilled to have a quick chat with him. Denis was a real gent - extremely genial, and happy to have a chat and share a joke with anyone and everyone walking past. I'm far too young to have seen him play, but I've watched plenty of videos and some of his skills are absolutely sublime, mostly on pitches that would be deemed completely unplayable by today's standards. Edit - my dad says he was with Paddy Crerand.
RIP Denis - a bit before my time, but seen lots of footage of him in action - the back heal to relegate Man United springs immediately to mind
