He honestly thinks he’s some kind of political martyr and beyond reproach. I respect his view on Bloody Sunday and the troubles - plenty share them. I get why he doesn’t want to wear a poppy. I don’t think anyone should be forced to anyway and he’s not the only player to not wear one. It isn’t compulsory. I don’t respect his way of proclaiming his ‘views’. I don’t respect his outspoken hatred of the people of Britain nor of the way he clearly detests pretty much everything about the country that has kept him in very well remunerated employment for many years. If he didn’t want to be directly involved in remembrance then he could just stay respectfully silent and not be involved. But he chooses to make a public show of himself, refusing to link arms with teammates or standing miles away during the last post drawing attention onto himself. Inciting supporters wherever he goes but it’s never his fault. He’s not far off retirement age. He can **** off back to his precious Derry, and bask in its sunlit uplands then. (A city which was built/extended in the large part using finance supplied by men from London, hence the name Londonderry - a name that wasn’t necessarily widely used but wasn’t seen as a problem or offensive to anyone for over three hundred years right up to the sixties); the history from thereon is of course different and well known.
Ah, The Daily Mail. Gatekeepers of inclusion and diversity. The amount of abuse he will take, game in game out, will be insane. The first time he gives a bit back, there’s outrage. Never ceases to amaze me, how easily offended the free speech warriors are.
Whilst I admit it is difficult not to react. The fact he does so, inflames the situation. His manager says he's used to it and doesn't bother him. Apparantly not. He may not hate the British. And its aimed at bloody Sunday soldiers. But he needs more self control. (Hard as I say)
I do hope you are not suggesting that the Daily Mail is anything other than the keeper of factual British history and impeccable in the balance it brings to all its coverage? That, young man, would be a slur on a Newspaper that is the best representation of the British (English) people in 2025.
Can’t read the article as I’ve either got to accept all their cookies and agree to personalised advertising or pay and I’m not doing either for that cesspit of a shrill site
Do you think he deserves the constant barrage of racist, sectarian abuse and death threats, because he chooses not to wear a poppy?
No not at all. I don't think he helps himself by posting pictures of him teaching his kids in a balaclava calling it a history lesson on his socials or posting pictures of him in a Spain shirt when we played Spain in the euros finals, turning his back on the last post at oakwell or various other things he's done over the years. I don't have much sympathy for him.
Me neither, honestly can’t believe anyone sticks up for him, like you say the balaclava episode was so pathetic.
