That’s not what I’ve said. Phillips is a more gifted player who can hit the kind of passers no one else at the club can. Nwakali is better at the more simple stuff & very rarely gives the ball away.
Except for when he eventually gets on (Nwakali)...he will hit a minimum of 3 ...40 yard diagnals to feet effortlessly...plus the defence splitters....which are a bit rarer. Listen I like Phillips (question his work load sometimes) a lot but if its long, short or anything in between our Nigerian is the man for passes. Phillips has also got a very good cross on him (best at club) and without a shadow of doubt best shot....imho.
What are you basing it on though?....I agree he looks classy... neat and tidy with a nice pass, but he's now 26, since 2019 he's played around 130 games, to what standard I don't know, but he's only managed 7 goals. The lad doesn't seem to be a goalscorer of any note. In the same time frame Adam Phillips has played 190 games with 45 goals....25 in 94 games for us.
Perhaps we will. But that’s not my point. In my opinion Nwakali is the best genuine midfielder we have had at the club for a long time. I’m not putting Phillips down, because he is an important part of the team, particularly when he plays as he can, I simply believe that Nwakali is in a different class. Just my opinion, that’s all.
And any team needs a balance of attributes. Glavin without Banks and McHale would probably not have been as effective. As I have stated in a separate post, I’m not putting Phillips down, I just don’t rate him as highly as Nwakali. Just my opinion though.
Nwakali must start games' he's head and shoulders when he's on the pitch' i've always liked Connell but he's just a shadow of the player he was before his illness.
I agree every team needs a balance of attributes, but when you're a team whose strikers can't score to save their lives, the last thing you need is to replace a midfielder with a better than 1 in 4 strike rate with a lad who can't score in the proverbial br***el.
Connell - arm band weighs to heavy, forms dipped. Robert’s - too slow. Perhaps a sweepers role would suit. Russell - too slow off the mark, DKD. - too slow, but works hard and can finish. Phillips. - inconsistent playing wide, l’d like to see him as an out and out striker, good with the head and can shoot instinctively. Clarke. - needs to be more ruthless with team selection, no favouritism, Of course this is just in my own opinion.
I think yesterday was a big mistake by Clarke - never change a winning team. It's not rocket science.
I think we are getting into semantics here. Nwakali's Ballon d'Or award in the U17 World Cup, following in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos, is surely rather good evidence that he is naturally a very talented footballer. I'm not certain there's much of a difference between "talented" and "gifted". I like Adam Phillips, by the way, and think he is a very good player for us.
I think you’re overthinking a very simple thing. We started very strongly, had loads of possession and chances, but failed miserably to take advantage. If the goals go in, the rest takes care of itself, it’s a different game and changes both teams mentality. Whilst I felt sorry for Pines and McCarthy for being dumped, I don’t think that’s the reason for our defeat, and neither is Connell - You could argue that we conceded more goals with him off the field than on. As for Watters being a wrong choice, why? He’d scored against Crawley and assisted Phillips goal against Wrexham. What more could you ask of your strikers? Losing DKD didn’t help either, he’s currently our main goal threat. I think after 4 straight wins, everyone is allowed an off day at a place where we traditionally struggle. I’d be worried If we are so wasteful against Stevenage, but until it happens, I’m just taking it as a bad day at the office for our attackers.
Unless Connell was off the pitch when Bristol scored their first goal ,- he may have been, I wasn't there - I don't think you would win the argument that we conceded more goals with Connell off the field than on it. He was subbed just after his giving the ball away led to our being 2-0 down.
No you’re right. For some reason I thought Connell was swapped at half time, but it was DKD that went off. I was there as well, and hadn’t had a drink.
