And not surprisingly we sold him cheaply in the end, to Aston Villingham, the following season. Despite the fact that Clarkie kept trying to say that he's not going anywhere, as he's a top player, etc!.
Didn't he play all over though? I'm sure he played up front, full back and even centre half too in his time with us.
Yeah that always bugged the hell out me, that Gray was used as a utility player sometimes. He filled in, in certain areas when needed, but he still always scored goals. Just think ehh if he'd been used properly, and what he could have done!.
Btw Frog mate I haven't forgot about you lol, and I will make the next season memories thread, in the 90s. So you can join in with us oldies then ehh.
Remember we had two great Lg Cup matches against Tottingham, who went full strength in those days, with their World cup players. We came back to lead 2-1 at one point in the home leg, before eventually losing it 2-3. And then we lost 5-3 in the second leg at White Hart lane. But to lose 8-5 over two legs, against that quality team, was an achievement.
And speaking of Tottingham lol, we had to go back there again in Feb, and play Ars*enal in the Fa cup 5th round. They had a star like Charlie Nicholas up front of course, and I think he scored against us that day.
Remember the game at Sunderland we were kept in for quite a while after game plenty unhappy Sunderland fans
A class act was Stuart Gray. I'd have him in my top 5 midfielders and when a favourite squad of all my time watching tarn is mentioned I'd fit him in easily. But tbh. I'd forgot he scored so many goals.
I sometimes wish we were in Northern Premier North along with Scarborough, Hartlepool, Alfreton, Buxton and Scunny. Absolutely superb trips away that will stay in the old memory banks forever .. hopefully.
If memory isn't playing tricks, we had only won 4 games before Christmas but only lost 4 for the rest of the season and avoided relegation fairly comfortably in the end.
Yeah Basil lol, we had a surprisingly really good second half of the season, carrying on from the win at Hull on new years day. I think we were still in trouble though, before gaining a massive win at Stoke on Easter Monday.
