It’s potentially a good signing if we bring 3 or 4 other players in in the required positions that need strengthening.

If we don’t then it’s a pointless signing really.

Priorities are a couple of strikers, a defender & a midfielder.

I was hoping that might be the case when I read it, but it's not what I, as a supporter, want to be hearing from the Head Coach right now. As expectation management, it's a mis-calculation, but I'm more inclined to believe that it's closer to the truth.

We'll know for sure in a few days, but I'm feeling much worse about things BFC related at 11am than I was at 7am this morning.

We activated a one year extension to Killip's contract last June and he will be out of contract in the summer, I suspect that will be him done at the club. This is a strange loan signing in my opinion but Clarke and the coaching team must feel Smith is nowhere near ready even a a backup. Killip will be pretty pissed off after his recent displays.
There appears to be other areas of the pitch that need addressing as a much higher priority but let's see what happens over the next few days.

If Smith is still intended to be our long-term number 1 why did we try to sign Will Norris?

I think Killip fully understood the situation and he was acting as a stop gap until someone comes in. Yes he has made a few good saves as Clarke pointed out but not the most confident when crosses and corners are incoming. Clarke's words didn't throw him under the bus, just confirmed what the plan has been and still is in that area.

Only annoying thing for me is that if we have switched the fax machine off and concluded our business. Especially with Jalo injured, both Watters and Humphs limping off, 100% someone required up top.

I’ve learned with Barnsley fc these days to expect the worse, anything else is a bonus

    Agree.

Clarke wanted a different keeper to replace Killip. And he’s got that. The club have provided what the Head Coach wanted. That’s what we all want.

Killip has done ok, but he’s not top level and never will be. It allows Smith out on loan too, which is what is needed.

You can’t do transfers in order of priority, doesn’t work like that. You can only judge the whole window when it’s closed.

Putting my glib earlier statement to one side, ultimately is he a better player than the one we already have in that position? On paper it looks that way though the lack of experience in the English game is a concern. Time will tell. Killip has done a decent job but no more and we should welcome better players to club with the competition for places that it brings as standards should improve.

Do I think goalkeeper was one of the three key positions we needed to recruit for? No
Does this signing improve my confidence in the recruitment policy of the club? No
Do I believe this signing will improve the current team? Yes

I couple of weeks ago on here, Killip was atrocious and we desperately needed a new keeper.

Talk of promotion to the Championship. With a defence that's flaky and a goal shy strike force I would have thought that's a long shot for a keeper that's here until the end of the season. It might be that the thinking is the defence is flaky because they have no confidence in Killip who, in fairness, has been OK since replacing Slonina. Another keeper wouldn't have been on my list of priorities for this window, especially one on a short term loan.

The ONLY positives I’ve seen in this window so far are that a) we’ve signed a player who can play at left wingback and b) the owners have just injected a chunk of money into the club which suggests we might be going to pay a fee for someone in the next day or two.

Because they’ve realised the long term number one will only be good enough if long term we are at a lower level I’d assume….

Unfortunately that might happen if the direction we are going in continues. If we get weaker season upon season, finish lower season upon season, eventually there’s only one result.

    It needs halting.

I hope he’s great. 4th time lucky perhaps (smith/killip/ the American lad) all deemed not good enough by the coach just this season.

So that will be 3 ‘regular’ keepers this season we’ve played. We had a loan Keeper last year, was he in goal all year? - who was before that? I lose track.

again it just points to not recruiting the right players from the off, you can forgive the odd ones but our recruitment is more miss than hit it’s unreal.

how can we have to recruit 4 goalkeepers to maybe get one good enough - the strike rate is awful.
