I recently saw a post on Facebook in which someone told another to ‘go back to working on your masters plantation’. I accused the poster of being racist, and their reply was along the lines of ‘so what?’, so I reported it to FB.

Firstly, it was difficult to report as ‘racism’ wasn’t amongst the categories available,

Today I was told that the post wasn’t found to be offensive and my complaint hadn’t been upheld.

Am I being a bit sensitive on behalf of someone else, or has ‘free speech’ evolved to include anything that takes your fancy, with no recourse?

They don't care. Zuckerberg has got rid of fact checking and was at Trumps inauguration. Make of that what you will.

I think you make a decent point but as a whole virtue signalling gets right on my tits. Can't do with people getting upset for someone else who may or may not be offended. It's their "freedom" to be or not to be offended.

Waste of time. Reported quite a few pornographic ads that have started appearing as well and just get the same message

Sounds like a good time for decent people to quit that platform.

Meant freedom of speech. (Just in case the "wow" was meant for dramatic effect.)

To me, it's no different from a racist abusing someone in a pub. I'll be one of the people making sure said racist is shown the door because it's the right thing to do and the victim deserves to know decent people have their back.

I quite facebook a long time ago and twitter when Musk took over. Never been in Instagram or Tiktok. I've had a couple of conversations with friends of late raising the very point of morality and decency and whether their personal values align with those social media platforms.

Social media is just a mirror on the more extremes of reality. Why pick out X or Facebook, there's plenty of racist stuff on here that just slips by.

Exactly this. If someone is being racist, then they're getting told. Whether it's at work, at the pub, at the rugby club, on Facebook or on here.

The term "virtue signalling" is a huge red flag too.

The guy who made the comments is either a twa.t or a nice bloke Stephen. He should be told so whichever he is. I know what I think. I'd have done the same as fitzytyke. I dont go in for labels like 'virtue signalling'. If something's not right then it's not right.

Privately reporting racism is not virtue signalling so I fail to see why you brought up virtue signalling at all.

No, I was actually shocked at what you’d written. It came across as ‘it’s not what you say, it’s how it’s received’.

I reported a video on fb only last week where a young black girl said she would never date a white man, the interviewer asked if she was racist, she said yes, like the OP after they looked into it they decided it wasn't, but don't stop calling it out, from all sides

I didnt purposely ‘pick out’ FB in isolation mate, It’s just that it was the most overt piece of racism I’ve seen in some time, and it was only today that my report was ‘resolved’ - or not.

If someone was as obviously offensive on here, or anywhere. I’d like to think I’d call them out as well.

We always have to be careful about saying people have a 'right' not to be offended - they don't. But Racism would usually break the law. If something is unlawful - it's unlawful and consequences should follow.

You were absolutely right to all out this clear example of racism. The fact that you were not the intended victim is neither here nor there and I can't see how any fair minded person would see it as "virtue signalling". Quit facebook mate, I did and don't miss it one bit.

Those bloody virtue signallers, reporting crimes. I read a newspaper story about someone who called the police after witnessing a stabbing. Got right on my tits, someone getting upset for someone who may or may not be bothered about getting stabbed.

    Zombie knives.
Have reported so many posts on both FB and X it's unreal.
Every time, 'no rules have been broken'. Usually followed by another News at 10 headline of a butchered teen.
