All very perplexing....I was watching red all over this morning and they were quoting that our transfer budget would be substantially more than last season. Now we kind of did that budget with the recruitment of DKD but we still have the MORE bit to spend. I'm still not sure how, with that in mind we couldn't secure a proper striker...in the mold of James Collins.
There’s a couple of English lads that have been in the US third tier - not sure who else is viable and available.
Players must be unregistered at the close of the window qualify as free agents. It's why you sometimes see clubs release players on deadline day.
I think we can fairly safely rule this out as a chosen strategic option. Who in their right mind decides on "let's wait for the window to close and then look at what's left to choose from" in terms of addressing a known and obvious shortfall in the playing squad? It's a reactionary step, and suggests that something else potentially broke down during the window to cause it.
It's quite possible that who we wanted as first decibels third choice, the deals broke down our clubs didn't want to let them go at this stage of the season. The club don't spend much money regardless, so they're not going to spaff it away on people they don't want just to fill a spot. The free market allows for an end of season contract offer to cover that option. Just because we don't hear everything that's gone on in the background, doesn't mean nothings happened. They'll have been working to get their targets in but won't pay over the odds in a January transfer window, which is notorious for inflated prices. If it isn't addressed this summer, with a squad over-hall and rebalancing act, then it's clearly incompetence as they missed out last minute on their targets last minute, in what was supposed to be a done deal for quite a while. I'm not a fan of this recruitment process or team, but we will have to see what we've got in and where we are come the end of the season to really hold them to account.
Did you forget that it didn't also happen last summer either, is it only us that deals break down for? 111 days over 2 windows and months and months of time to potentially talk to agents and get a feel for things but we are scrambling around for a free agent on February 6th via Zoom with our Head Coach, some of which have been free agents since June 30th 2024, let that sink in
I would say it's a reaction - they've got form for knee jerk stuff. Sacking Collins, signing Hourihane. Usually after a fan backlash, they do something to right their wrongs. Imo.
You can do as much premptive work as you like but it might mean sod all when the game actually starts.
Please don't tell me your trying to find some reasoning behind having from June 30th 2024 to end up with your head coach on a zoom call Thursday afternoon of February 6th 2025. We managed to get Killip, Cosgrove and Lofthouse out of the door to other clubs quick enough without very little planning but can't bring in a number 9 with 7 months timescale.
See the suggestion made by @Biddy37 I'm inclined to agree that we have had discussions with Martyn Waghorn.
Maybe not but he is good, and I do believe he started as a wing back, and we seem to take a fancy to them
